Jesus. Says a lot about the way the car industry is going when a miserable list like that is up for "best" !

Between that and Pontiac going out of business because it couldnt figure out how to fit in with the rest of the boring car crusade, I swear we'll all be driving a 1 metre squared cube on four dolly wheels by the time we hit 2020.

That's a pretty terrible lineup. Giulietta wins on style and engines / technology (MultiAir).
The DS3 is interesting on the style front if it wasn't lumped in with the common or garden C3.
The Leaf is interesting as a technological study, but you'd need a brown paper bag over your head to drive one.
The Dacia Duster will be interesting for Dacia but not many else.
The rest, meh! Me too cars, nothing else.

My vote would go to the Giulietta for those reasons too.

What's wrong with the new S60/V60? If the likes of that win it then I think it will be a breath of fresh air, as Volvo have never won the award before, which in no way can be put down to their cars, but to the fact that they have always been overlooked as a brand in general.

I reckon the Giulietta will win because there will be many Italian judges on the panel I'm sure and the 147 and 156 have won before. The ECoTY are never too radical in the cars they've awarded and have never strayed too far from previous cars that have wond the accolade in the past. Whatever it is, it's going to be at least a family hatchback no doubt.

Nothing wrong with it, I'll admit to not having seen it in the flesh yet and may be surprised, but it looks to me to be a subtle evolution of the outgoing model, which I do happen to like. It would be nice to see Volvo win, but I don't think the S60 will because there's very little new or unique about it. The CMax falls in the same bucket albeit a very good car, I'm sure.
The replacement for the current S40 which I think I've heard will be a 5 door hatch is Volvos opportunity, it should break some new ground for the company.

Judges are heavily weighted in favour of Italians so the ALFA will most likely take it. Best of the list too - Opel Meriva...? Jesus wept...

I'm not a betting man, but judging from what I've read on the internet so far, I would put strong money on either the Giulietta, S60/V60 or Nissan Leaf taking it.

Autocar says that the 'strong favourite' to win is the Leaf.

If that happens it quite literally will mean the turning over of a new leaf, it will officially mark the end of the road for the motoring enthusiast.

I really want the Alfa to win, it is the only really interesting car there apart from the Volvo S60 and the DS3.

The problem with giving the award to the DS3 is that they have twinned it with the regular C3, which is basically a box on wheels. Much and all as I like Volvo, the S60 doesn't deserve to win either, it is based on a nearly four year old car(the Mondeo).

There have been some really good cars this year launched, like the new Merc CLS(the first Merc I've wanted in a very long time, I can't wait to see that on the roads) and the new 5 series(a brilliant car apart from the fact it doesn't drive like a BMW should according to those in the know) and the people that decide these awards have passed these over:confused::(!

The people that decide these things have as much credibility as Bertie Ahern does on economics.

    Opel Meriva
I voted for the Leaf, at the very least it is a bold move by Nissan, putting a full size electric car out on the (mass) market, and at best it could well be the dawn of a new age in motoring. It's the only innovative car on that list.

    Dacia Duster
The DS3 is brilliant! I'ld vote for that.

The Guilietta is good as well but I don't like its 'mito'ish front end...

Yeah you're right, taking out a loan on a two year-old four cylinder 3 Series is far better than investing in a reasonably priced budget SUV.

Hardly unprecedented for a winner to not be new from the ground up. The 2001 winner, the Alfa 147, the 1998 winner the Alfa 156 and the 1996 winner, the Fiat Bravo/Bravo, all trace their origins back to the 1989 winner the Fiat Tipo. It says a lot about the engineering of the Tipo platform even if the Tipo is long forgotten.

Bloody hell. Not exactly a vintage year then.

    Edit:What about the Juke?
