UK O2 iPhone 3GS - use in Ireland?

Our business has just upgraded a bunch of 16Gb 3GS iPhones to move to the iPhone 4 in our UK office. All UK phones are supplied to us with O2 on contracts in the UK.

Can I now unlock the spare 3GS phones to use them for our Irish staff? We use Vodafone in Ireland and as you know iPhones are horrific to purchase/get on contract here. Earlier this year I paid Vodafone 380 euro for my 32Gb 3Gs and the buggers brought out the iPhone 4 a month later without advising me. Agggghhh !

    Many thanks,

    Bishop

It wasn't widely known at the time, and they should have advised their loyal customers.I could easily have waited another month

erm, apple always bring out a new phone in the june/july time frame.

also the fact that the iphone 4 leaked in march/april further bullet proofed the fact there was a new one coming.

why would a carrier advise their "loyal" customers? hmm yes let's "advise" our customers to hold off giving us money so they get the best deal.

    this comes to mind:

The last two posts were not helpful at all, I didn't ask to be insulted with a lesson of dream and reality and I didn't ask for advice on the launch of the iPhone 4. Butt out if you are not being helpful.

O2 UK will unlock them. They can then be used on Vodafone Ireland.

You got your answer. If my post was insulting, report it and let the mods deal with it because if you wanted to get technical then your above post wasn't helpful at all either!

Also the info I gave you could help you in future when it comes to you upgrading again.

Don't be so bloody sensitive, he was only being facetious.

No company in their right mind is going to tell you a new phone is coming out soon, far less an iPhone. For one, they lose a pile of cash, two, release dates get leaked and they get inundated with phone calls from desperate apple fanboys, and three in the case of Apple they are contractually obligated not to release information that isn't officially in the public domain yet.

It's not unreasonable to expect that if you're so concerned about getting value for money as you seem to be, that you might have taken 30 seconds to google the iPhone, which would told you quite clearly that a new device was expected imminently.

Re your original question, yes O2 UK can unlock them subject to certain criteria, I haven't the foggiest what they might be but I wouldn;t call it set instone until you;ve spoken to them. In Ireland, they would be unlocked within 14 days.

Slightly OT, I prefer my 3GS anyway. :P

people knew for months before hand there was a 4 coming out, heck there was a new thread on here every day titled "buy a 3GS now or wait for the 4?"

anyway, hindsight is a great thing, least you now are more the wiser to Apples commercial use, they release a new iPhone every July without fail ;)

My original question on the possibility for O2 UK to unlock the phones has been answered, thank you to those who offered useful advice. I'll confirm back here (as promised) if that unlocking happens successfully.

I clearly underestimated the ability of certain forum members to offer unsolicited advice to what was really only a comment on my part, as a slightly disgruntled Vodafone customer regarding their sales technique. I dont really have the capacity to surf through the internet. No more comments please, save the creativity for another junior members thread.

    Thanks.

Bishop22, hate to break it to you, but everyone on this forum is correct. If you bought the iPhone a month before the iPhone 4 was released then more fool you. Were you completely ignorant of the fact that there was a new one in the works or what. I mean, it was only in every news paper, every news station and all over the internet. You really can't blame people for slagging you off for not being savvy. In fact one month before it was released here, it was already released in the US and up north.

You are new to this forum, so maybe you should be aware that we are all more than willing to help you with any issue you have. We can help with almost all problems when dealing with iPhone, but you have to be able to take a joke. If you didn't want our opinion, you shouldn't have posted the extra bit of information. Did you want us to say, "oh Vodafone, what assh%&ls" or state our true opinion.

Anyway, before this topic rail-roads off topic, you should know that you can unlock the iPhone with a program called ultrasn0w on the cydia app store. If the iPhone if pre 4.0.2, you can the update to 4.1 with a custom firmware that does not update the baseband.
