    hi,
sorry to hassle you folks, but i am wondering if i can get the rte\tg4\tv3 channels on my tv if i dont have an aerial. i think i can answer my own question I just need some experts to confirm my fears.
i have a sky dish and box. i cancelled sky a while back so i know use it as a freeview box where i can get the freeview channels such as bbc, itv etc.

Now, from what i have read on this saorview DTT service, although it is digital it can only be received via aerial so i still cant get rte.

bottom line, if i want to watch the irish channels before 2012 will i have to get an aerial installed?
i do have rabbits ear but the reception is not of viewing quality i am afraid.

You could try installing your aerial higher up in the attic pointed towards your local transmitter using the minimum standard of RG6 satellite cable and amplify it. :) Watty has written information about suitable tv aerials on techtir.ie

To receive analogue rte\tg4\tv3 you will have to install an external or attic aerial depending on your location or nearest transmitter.

Aerial required before and after 2012 with a compatible MPEG-4 STB or TV for DTT/Saorview. Also sometime next year it may be available via a satellite dish and receiver (Saorsat) but not with your current Sky dish and receiver.

The rabbit ear aerial may receive DTT/Saorview with a suitable digital STB or TV even if you don't currently receive good analogue reception. Someone in the Galway area may be able to give better reception advice regarding DTT reception.

OP there is a chance your current TV can recieve Saorview DTT if it's got mpeg4 compatible DVB-T tuner on it.

What make and model is your TV ?

Your TV is Not Mpeg4 http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=HU&mid=Link_FAQs&view=aa12_view_partial.html&session=20101102124435_83.70.37.199&new_tmpl=1&list=aa12_list_partial.html&slg=ENG&ctn=42PFL5603D/12&dct=FAQ&refnr=0081332&faqview=1 Not suitable for saorview in Ireland. Its perfect for freeview in the UK

    thats a balls.
so what are my options. i dont want to subscribe to sky or any of those so i assume my only option is to erect an antenna on the chimney which will be obsolete in december 2012 from my research.
on the link http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...1332&faqview=1 it says i would need additional equipment. i wonder what are they referring too?

Probably referring to this http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP10DT with a wideband Aerial.
Aerials wont be obsolete. TV.s that don't have a Mpeg4 tuner wont be able to receive Irish/Saorview with out a Saorview/DTT Receiver http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP10DT

    Hi,

Any aerial(s) or equipment you put in now will not be useless in 2012 if it's done properly.

What part of Galway are you in and we can see what you'd need.

If you have one erected now it will function after 2012. your research is flawed and confused.

Go to http://www.techtir.ie , it's a great site with loads of info by a real expert.
