Travel Insurance - Need to claim ASAP - Advice Please

    Hi all,

My wife and I have VHI travel insurance. We are supposed to be travelling to New York on Wednesday for a special break/celebration. Unfortunatley our 9 year old son was admitted to hospital yesterday and it looks like he will be kept in for another 2-3 days meaning we won't be able to take our trip.

The flights and hotel were both booked months ago and are non refundable. We can change them for a couple of weeks time (assuming our son is home and OK to be looked after by his Gran while we are away for the few days) but the cost of changing is almost as much as the original cost of the flights and hotel as we booked them in January and trying to rebook for two weeks time (closer to Thanksgiving and the start of the Xmas shopping season) is much more expensive.

What's the process for claiming under VHI Travel Insurance assuming we can even claim? Do we have to get their permission first? Do we just go ahead and reschedule our flights and hotel claim the difference from VHI afterwards?

Would really appreciate advice from those of you who have experience in related matters.

    Ben

Give them a call first thing in the morning. Even if you called now and spoke to someone, there's nothing anyone could do until then.

VHI cover the scenario you've outlined, but I think you'd get a refund for cancellation rather than them covering the cost of rebooking (assuming you already had the cover when you booked). In fairness, when I claimed a while back for hospital fees from Canada they paid out quite quickly.
