So, I wanna save some money. Not a whole lot, prob like 30/40 a week.
This means budgeting. Problem is, I don't do well when I have to starve/live of out-of-date bargains.

So I'm looking for the After Hours tips on budgeting without having to survive on beans and bread!!

set up a saving account that you dont have access to easily.

a direct debit with the credit union works for me. You have access to the money but it requires some effort to gt it. It is just too easy to take money out of your account

    Sell your body

Make a shopping list of the things you need and stick with it.
Stay in with a dvd and some bottles instead of going on a night out.
Get a money box that you can't open and throw whatever loose coins you can afford to, in it.

As said, stop eating and lose weight. Simple as that and your lifelong dream to be thin as a matchstick comes true. But have sweet dreams when the lights go out ;)

    Somewhere between €500-€1000.

If you drink fizzy drinks, give them up and only drink water. Or buy a bottle of mi-wadi/robinsons squash every so often and it should last a lot longer than a big bottle of coke would, for example.

Take a litre bottle of tap-water with you to work so you're not paying 1.80 for 500ml or whatever it is.

Make your lunch at home of course, if you're not already doing that.

If you live in Dublin and use the buses, save up any receipts you get. You'd probably save over a fiver a month doing this. I cashed them in last year and got about 40 quid...it all adds up!!

Keep away from the lotto and scratchcards.

Buy the cheapest version of all toiletries and kitchen items eg. tissue, handwash, soap, toilet bleach, kitchen towels, washing up liquid, scourers, cloths etc...lidl and tesco are good for getting these, and buy the biggest size to take advantage of economies of scale.

Never buy cd's or dvd's...just download them off the internet..

If you have access to a big freezer, bulk buy bread when its cheap and freeze it.

    Read this thread!

It will take you a week, but has plenty of good budgeting tips :D

Also, check the Tesco and Dunnes leaflets that come through your letterbox or in newspapers - look out for the Buy One Get One Free and 3 for the price of 2 offers.

If she does nothing except read that for a week, that'll be a great way of saving money!

Buying bulk when it comes to food is bad though in my experience, unless your living with a load of people most of it will be going in the bin.

I set up a savings account when I first started to work in Dublin. I don't save much but it builds up

I write how much I want to budget for the month, then I list my (most needed) expenditures (food, travel, going out, rent) and see how much I have left. What ever I have left I put into a savings account that I try and not touch, but I sometimes dip into it when I have an emergency!

Hmm, I suppose. I don't go too mad though...I would just buy maybe 4 or 5 loaves of good bread when its on an offer...and maybe buy 4 or 5 boxes of things like birdseye chicken fillets when its 1.25 for a box of 2 in tesco, instead of about 3.00.

Toiletries though don't need to be bought too often but it's good too buy the biggest size when you do get them...say a 16 pack of toilet tissue.
One thing I don't like to skimp out on though is shampoo; the cheapest stuff is rarely, if ever, any good, so I usually get the biggest size of head and shoulders.
For shower gel, I'd go for maybe the one that isn't a store brand, but is maybe two prices ahead of it.
Hair gel..I always buy brand name stuff.

Go against all proverbs and put all your eggs in one basket. That way you save on packaging.

Too many cooks really do spoil the broth, so fire them! Do some home cooking instead.

Ok, i know...i know.. its the Daily Mail but its basically what i think about expensive cosmetics most of the time. The ingredients list is worth researching and then you'll realise what you're paying for. Cheaper does not always equal bad.

Same goes for this. Shower gel is on ya for half a minute, it smells nice, it gets ya clean...store brand stuff has the same ingredients but is cheaper because they dont spend the dosh on fancy packaging and advertising.Think about it.

I sound like a feckin scab now, but Superquinn have a discounted section on food everyday. Ive gotten savage dinners for €4 (e.g. mash and a meat dish) that is literally half price if not more, and is that price because its Best Before is that day or the next.

Why do people constantly slag off the Daily Mail in AH, yet it is quoted so much.

So no need to apologize poster :)

    For the next year:

Make a big pot of homemade chicken soup on sunday eat it mon, tue & wed for dinner. Make a big pot of stew on wed, eat it Thu, Fri & Sat.

Eat porridge in the morn and last thing at night every day.

Drink cheap wine and cider only

    Buy clothes in pennies only

If you want luxuries or a nice dinner call over to your friends or parents house.

Go over to Hanover Street or wherever it is Alison lives. You'll find small piles of drugs on doorsteps in the locality. Simply gather some of these up and then sell them at a good profit to the young professionals in the area.

PS: Don't try to sell to those who bought 190k appartments as they are more likely to be working class and will be more critical when purchasing their drugs.
    :D

I have a credit union account and it's the best for saving. I get paid into my bank account every week and a set amount of money goes straight out of it into the credit union account so I don't even have to touch it.
