2001 Audi Allroad....anyone have one?

I was looking at one today, a 2.5 diesel manual version, does anyone have one or know anything about them? Would it be worth buying? It looks a nice car with good spec and asking around 6000 euros for it. Any opinions, should I buy or look at something else?

I looked fairly closely into buying one a few years ago, and ended up going for a Subaru Forester instead. The Audi was a lovely car, but I was put off by the potential maintenance costs and the relative lack of performance. It was a good bit quieter than the Subaru at speed, though.

If the Subaru was diesel i'd certainly consider it.

They are heavy on fuel; it's not an issue for me as I only do maybe 16k kms pa but if you're doing big mileage then it would add up. On the plus side a 2.0 turbo will save you maybe €300pa in tax over the Allroad, and a major problem with the Audi's air suspension might eat a couple of years savings in one go! They're quite different in character too, the Subaru is a lot more fun but the Audi feels far more expensive. I've forgotten most of what I learnt to look out for on Allroads, but the main things I do remember were FSH, cambelts/tensioners/water pumps @60k miles/5 years, the air suspension, and an ATF and filter change at around 60k miles. This is supposedly a 'sealed-for-life' unit, but apparently 'life' is only around 100k miles without a fluid & filter change.

I was looking at Allroads a while back myself. Have been driving big 4x4's for years and wanted a change. I thought the Allroad would be perfect, with better road manners, a nice driving position and still having the surefootedness of 4wd.
But after reading up about them, they seem to be pretty high maintenance. Poor economy, mid 30's at best. Expensive servicing, the whole front end has to come off for a cam belt change. Suspension is plush, but serious money if something goes wrong.

Having said that, I'd still love one, but the expense (tax, fuel & servicing) has put me off...

I posted on this before. Had a 2.7T (Petrol) one, was an excellent excellent car. This maintenance myth is propagated by people who dont own one like this thread. Just imagine someone reading this who will repeat it on another forum, yet again without any first hand experience.

Allroads are no more maintenance heavy than an A6. The only difference is the Air Suspension, which is much much cheaper to service now than when launched (like EUR200 a corner if needed and you can change one at a time unlike normal suspension).

Please stop repeating maintenance myths unless you actually have the experience.

PS: A 530i is a fine alternative if you dont need Air Suspension, bigger interior than the AR. Also Im selling one.

In the most recent Sunday Times I think someone wrote in asking about Allroads and XC70s. There was a few tips in terms of listening to the 4wd system etc. Only about 3 paragraphs in total but worth you trying to hunt out.

Personally speaking, I would love one.

I was very interested in one at the time and based my decision on first-hand owners reports.

Even without air suspension, a Forester is likely to be far more reliable than an equivalent A6.

Come on now, I made it quite clear where my information came from, and the OP is free to treat it as they see fit.

I could be way off base here, but isn't AWD and the extra ground clearance the point of an Audi Allroad?;)

Well I dunno, I this is like the 3rd thread here and they all get replies "well i heard..".

Probably not "far more", but more yes, but the Audi has the interior and exterior as perks and lots of toys (Solar Sunroof springs to mind), so its going to have more bits to go wrong. But its those bits that make it an Audi.

Lol yeah, but some people buy'em for less useful reasons than those, like the size. And Im trying to sell a car. :)
