ok kinda of a stupid question..
my car tax is due today and i was wondering would i be aswell to tax it for the 12 months.. im guessing it will take a hit in the budget or do people think they will reduce motor tax and put more tax on fuel...??

my car is on the old tax (engine size) system.

they wont be introducing the kind of low tax high fuel duty scheme overnight imo. If they do opt for this (not very likely currently imo), it will most likely be implemented sometime in 2011.

My car is a 1.4 and is also on the old tax system based on engine size. One thing I will say is it's cheaper although slightly to get it for 12 months as opposed to the 6 or 3 months.

    In My Opinion:

Tax based on the engine size (old system) may not go up much if at all but probably won't come down. The emphasis will be mainly on the new CO 2 emmisions basis of assessment. Many new cars have very low CO2 levels and are placed in the A,B and C tax bands which are considerably less to tax compared to their earlier counterparts.

    Here's an example :

    2000 VW Golf mk4 1.4 Petrol 75 HP Tax : €333
    2010 VW Golf mk6 1.2 TSI Petrol 105 HP Tax : €156

The same car with a smaller turbo 1.2 petrol engine which is more powerful than the older 1.4 is less than half the tax of the mk4 ! 190cc of a difference and look at the differnce in tax income for the govt.

Thats my take on it anyways;)
I just paid my 333 4 weeks ago for 12 months so I'm ok for a while:)

Yeah, the amounts can be staggering like that with the bigger cars.

Ended up taxing it for the year as I doubt it will come down, if it stays the same I'm no worse off and if it goes up I made the right call.

Spot on, good choice I'd say:D

And it's cheaper to tax it for a year anyway. I think it's nearly €100 extra for me to tax my car 4 times a year, rather than once for 12 months.

As you said, I can't see motor tax being reduced any time soon!

I always tax my car for the year, to avoid the extra charge for 3 and 6 month periods and to avoid possible budget increases. It nice to not have to worry about it for a year aswell! Unless you write off the car the next day!:)
