Microsoft Scam?

My GF just text me saying that "Microsoft" phoned her today because she may have had an infected PC/Laptop and that he was to give her some codes that she could run to get the so called Virus/Trojan removed.

This is the second phone call like this we have received. Coincidentally, my GF answered the phone the second time too.

It was someone from "Bank of Ireland" yet, when asked, would not give a name or Branch from where she was operating. She asked my GF for the number across her Credit Card/Laser Card (Neither of which she has) - When my GF asked what it was in relation to she was simply told "It's a routine security check to make sure you have the right card" - WTF?! Of course I have the right card, it says Mrs. XXXXXX

Anywho, just a heads up to people as I'm unsure on the legitimacy myself.

Why would Microsoft want her credit card details?

I've been getting that on and off for the last few months. Luckily everyone in my house is computer savvy so no details were handed over. I can imagine this is fooling quite a few people though. Despite having told the callers that we're aware that it's a scam they keep persisting with the calls. We keep a whistle by the phone now.

In fairness the Bank of Ireland clearly say that when asked over the phone you should always give your personal details out. In my opinion your GF is very foolish to queation this as the Bank will now not be able to make sure her card is fully secure.

Also Microsoft is an internationally recognised company, why wouldnt you trust them? I'd input those codes as soon as possible.

I wish I got calls like this but for some reason I dont. A friend of mine got an email last week from a Nigerian prince who wanted to give him loads of money, something got to do with his father, The King dying and he wanted to escape from a revolution or that, so my friend stands to make millions out of it. He'll need it pretty soon too because someones started stealing money from his account, but he'll be fine once the money comes from Nigeria.

I'm always surprised when people believe this sort of thing.

They wouldn't still be operating if people didn't believe them.

Damn those cc thieves trying to steal her details so that they can run up huge bills in her favourite shoe shop, beauty spa, weekend away, designer clothes, etc before the next cc bill comes along.
    :D
On a serious note never give your cc details to anyone who calls you on the phone.
