looking for a safe place to live

Hi I am returning home to limerick next year with my wife and 2.5 year old daughter and wandered if anyone could tell me where is safe to live.

I contacted Roxboro Road Garda Station and asked them if they could tell me if the Steeples, Mulgrave St, were safe because daft showed some nice apartments. They said they never had any red flags show up and it’s a nice place.

Can anyone tell me differently and what other places are nice to live in? When I return to limerick ill have to sign on temporally and get rent allowance just as a started to help me.

Also please genuine answers please as I have a 2 and a half year old girl who needs to be kept safe

Mulgrave St. - Oh, I know the one, down the street past the Jail across from the Mental Asylum - in close proximity to a number of "taking your life in your hands to visit" areas.

    - Soon to have new Court Buildings to attract typical Court type Patrons.

There should be an awful lot of other Addresses on your list first I reckon?

Also with your Daughter in mind you really should think very seriously about going for a place within walking distance of a Park, Shelbourne Rd. Park is really nice.

Never heard anything bad about them, the only ones i would stay away from are steamboat key/mount kenneth area.

Last i heard dole waiting was about 9 weeks. So hope you have few quid to keep you going.

Also how long are you out of Ireland as 'habitual residents' is coming up a lot, that irish people who return home are entitled to nothing. Don't want to be a scare you, just being realistic.

Why not see if you can rent a place without a lease, as then you can find something better when you get here.

The only way rent is going is down, as people are leaving limerick in search of employment.

If your not coming back till june, i think your looking too early.

I would go for outside of city with a kid, maybe raheen, dooradoyle, clareview, caherdavin, castletroy.
(there is small house on ennis road at the moment on daft for €650.)

Lots + lots to choose from.

    Hi mate,

I would recommend anywhere in castletroy apart from too close to UL. been living here from 6 years with two kids, no worries at all so far. will definately recommend. Expect to pay about 650-700...

I think you might have posted in the wrong county's thread :P. It disappointed me that nobody said that yet :(

But seriously, the suburbs would be best for raising a family imo. Anywhere from Raheen, Castletroy and Corbally would be nice areas.

Guys - I am also looking for some help on this front if possible as I am totally new to Limerick - never even been before!

I will be working in a couple of locations in Limerick - Raheen and Castletroy, so had been thinking of living close enough to the city centre, as I don't drive and this would be best for public transport - or maybe say a mid-way between Dooradoyle and the City centre. Would this area be ok? I am a little concerned about the safety of living in the City Centre as I can imagine the suburbs / a bit further out would be more ideal in this respect. I really don't know the relatively quiet / safe parts of the city centre so any help in this regard would be great - I know it's the city so it is never going to be quiet - but I know in Dublin City Centre for example some parts are better than others.

Also any other spots apart from daft myhome and rent.ie I could try?
    Thanks a mill!

Going to be tough if you're relying on public transport in Limerick, it's nowhere near as good as Dublin's.

Imo, the best place to live in Limerick is on the strands, either Clancy or O'Callaghan strands or near them. Easy walking distance to town, near good pubs like the Curragower or JJ Bowles, short walk to Dunnes or Tesco in town etc.

Would you be working in one place more than the other?

If it was more in raheen/dooradoyle area i would live that area or sc road.(walking distance to town)

Bus service in raheen/dooradoyle is very good (every 10 mins sometimes) castletroy (not so good bus)

+1 on strand area, ennis road.

    City centre maybe city central.

eclectichoney - buses between the two areas run via the city centre, so living between them, as the crow flies, wouldn't help you at all! You'd still end up getting a bus into the city, and then to wherever you're working! +1 on the suggestions of Clancy/O'Callaghan Strands!

tonyheaney - I'd agree with other posters regarding Castletroy. We're living out there and within walking distance of my house is a primary school, secondary school, kiddies play park, pharmacy, lots of restaurants (2x chinese, italian, good pub grub), pub, Superquinn, beautician, creche...I could go on and on! Would definitely recommend looking out this direction!

Good luck to both of you with your upcoming moves!! :)

I hate to bust your bubble but nowhere can be classed as safe anymore, and thats not just Limerick, some areas that were always classed as safe and nice are now being infested by scum because of the regeneration program.
find out where a td or minister lives, that would be a good bet because they never seem to get that sort of thing.

Not being funny but I think a thread of someplace nice to live would have got the same point across and would be less negative to Limerick or any city for that point.

Best of luck house hunting, and
My two cents, the suburbs if dooradoyle or castle troy would be worth looking at.

    Rgds - Ken

Thanks guys for the feedback - Ken, just to note I didn't start the thread so the title is not down to me lol - I just gate-creashed somebody else's!

I'm thinking probably round the south circular road area might be a good bet, or the city centre, in terms of location, so fingers crossed I find somewhere :)
