Hey guys.... Just looking for a bit of relevant advice...!! At the moment im in my last year of Business studies degree... I have been researching a couple of Intelligence and Security courses in the UK considering we have none here in Ireland....I have a huge interest in anti terrorism, security issues etc and ultimately would love a career in this area... However, unlike the uk with the m15 and m16 i know ireland has no particular agencies. I am aware of the g2 unit within the military but I dont want to go down that career route... Can anyone advise me about agencies in ireland or europe which I may be eligible for and that im not aware of etc?....I know alot of agencies require citizenship of that particular country and so it should be but im wondering has any irish person worked in this area that could give me advice on where to look for jobs etc... I would appreciate any information... Cheers....

Im not sure if you can join MI5 and MI6 straight off the bat. Irish citizens are restricted from doing I think but there are units within the Police and British Army that you can join. In Ireland you have to join the gardai or irish army if you want to get into intelligence. Again you cant get in straight away unless assigned which you may have a good chance. The French Foreign Legion has an intelligence unit and I imagine it would be pretty interesting but you need at least 2 years of service and be a NCO. The military is a pretty good starting point for this kind of career. Interpol and europole are open as well but you need to be part of some police organisation.
I'd recommend the PSNI. They have top notch intelligence units and equipment and great money to start off with.
Im not sure about the FBI but I read somewhere that you need to be a graduate and have a green card or citizenship.

    I hope this helps

You could probably join the Israeli Defence Forces if you really wanted to, then possibly get into Mossad, for intelligence work I doubt you would find better really.

Even if MI5 and MI6 do accept applications from Irish citizens I suspect you could encounter issues with regards to security vetting - as it is applicants to the P.S.N.I. from the Republic take up to a year (and longer in many cases) to pass vetting.I would imagine the vetting by the security/intelligence services would be even more rigorous and ultimately they may not be happy or confident about the quality of information they get ?

no need to worry, they dont accept irish applicants. checked the website...so that rules that option out....

i dont know exactly what your looking for. how do you know intelligence work is any different from the work the army and police do?

i worked for six years for a large american company in manchester on security, all the managers were american ,the security officers were all british , two CIA agents would come to check us out about every six months, we were not supposed to know who they were, but as all american visiters had to let us know when they would arrive, and they never did ,it was not difficult to spot them as CIA,they unlike most of our american visitors, they were dressed in suits, it became a bit of fun to us all as i would say to them ..daffodill are yellow this year, and it seems that it became a joke within the CIAs european branch, because i was always met with a smile and remark,bast..ds,but just to say in the intelligence services there are many levels, some are just routine jobs like checking things out, they are the ones that MI6 are advertising, for the higher more dangerous work [infiltrators] many different nationalities may be used. it could be that a irish terrorist branch is working undercover in london, and they want someone on the inside,it would be no good sending in some oxford speaking idiot ,

This thread should be like walt honey ;) But can any of you tell me what colour the boat house is in hereford?

    bergundy with white architrave:D:D:D

they key question is what function does the boathouse serve?

There's a Military History and Strategic Studies MA in Maynooth. Another option might be to join the Department of Foreign Affairs, if they ever start recruiting again.

....and if you haven't proficiency in one other language (English and Irish are not included) I'd work on that - I'm sure Farsi, Pashtun or Mandarin would be useful - there's a Mandarin course in Trinity.

    Good luck

There is a number of different intelligence agencies in the country, they are part of larger organisations:

    The Army

    The Gardai
    http://www.garda.ie/Controller.aspx?Page=40&Lang=1

    The Revenue

I know for the Army and Garda units you have to sign up and do your time before you can apply for the intelligence sections. You must complete a selection process.

Thanks guys for your replies... so do you reckon if I did a course in international relations or something similar would it help me get into the intelligence unit in the guards in the future or would you just be wasting your own time if its all who you know ya know what i mean? I realise i have to wait for a recruitment drive and probably be a long wait before anything moves but i mite aswel prepare while im waiting... :p

Although such a course would in theory benefit someone hoping to work in the intelligence side of the Gardai I have to say everyone one I know in the Guards says such courses are a total waste - it's all who you know and not what you know............

Nonsense, the vast majority of promotions & appointments in the Gardaí are on merit and not down to connections.

I'm sure MI5/6 would take you on but being Irish I think you have a fair idea of exactly where you'd end up if you worked for them. Read Unsung Hero or watch 50 dead men walking first anyway!

Perhaps learn Farsi/Arabic/Urdu, American agencies might have more interest in you then.

Learn Hebrew and with an Irish passport you can...oh....wait.

If you were technically minded, you could go for computer forensics. Its not as sexy as other intelligence roles but would suit some people.
Probably more for the corporate environment although there are some garda/military positions for this type of work.

What are these sexy roles you speak of!? I wouldn't imagine you'd ever find yourself in a high speed chase in an Aston Martin DB9!

I'd highly consider intelligence work as well except my other career options would be much more lucrative (Although I've yet to really hear figures for intelligence) and most likely would never see me imprisoned in a terrorist compound (unlike the flash cars, such a scenario is reasonably plausible)
