    Hi
i bought a 1996 golf gti over the weekend, Shell is immaculate and totally unmodified, quite high mileage and bit sluggish when driving.

Just wondering anyone knows where best to revive this engine and get it firing again. Think it may need a new clutch and back box...also idling is a little off, maybe dirt in petrol thank....

wondering is anyone knows somewhere well priced where specialise in Golfs/gti's or if anyone ha a home garage and could take a look at it for me...

    Thx

they are 150bhp ish, not exactly fast when new.

well they're not exactly an M5 but they still shouldnt actually feel slow or hesitant, they do have reasonable poke for that size of car. Someone always has to jump in and throw a dig at any car don't they? why would you think that could actually be a useful thing to do? guy asks for some kind of advice.... better just tell him his car has only 150bhp

You should go through all the standard service stuff first unless you've got 100% proof of new plugs, filters, oil etc.

How do you mean idling is off? fluctuating idle? idle too low/too high? rough/"lumpy" idle? there's a few ways in which you can have a bad idle

AFAIK the standard car was 115bhp, the GTI 16v was 150.

I'm not throwing a dig, just pointing out they are not a fast car, the 150bhp is badly needed in one. I presumed it was a 150bhp, if it's not 16valve than it will be like a 1.6 Focus to go. Some folk reckon because a car is a GTi it should go like sh1t off a shovel.

dont need it to go like s..t off a shovel, just want it drive smooth, when in 5th and rev's drop below 2500 it shudders a little....when you shouldnt need to drop a gear, its not smooth at this point...

i used to have a 95 gti 16v and used to go great, but was rusted to ****e...

this one has no rust so want to spend some cash and get it pullin proper

    its a keeper
