Hi all. Going up north for a bit of shopping. Would I be better off withdrawing from a cash machine up there or changing to sterling down here in Dublin first. Which is cheaper? Thanks;)

Not a lot of difference between the two.
Bring Euro with you, some shops give a good exchange rate when you are buying goods.

It will always be cheaper to withdraw in the country of the currency you want. - So better to withdraw in the North.

btw - don't expect any big savings anymore.

Some shops giving .89 to the £ at the moment...others may not be so favourable though....credit card rate at the moment is around .85 so slightly more favourable at the shop rate...if you can afford to do it, try the following:

    1. Bring a few hundred Euro in Cash- this will enable you to get the favourable rate (.89 or better) if it's in your chosen shop - if the rate is not favourable (e.g. .80 ) use card and bring euros back home with you
    2. Bring small anount of STG in cash for coffee/food etc.

Depends what you're purchasing - better deals on wine in ROI than in the past which makes it less favourable for this product and groceries in general are cheaper in ROI than 1 year ago but there are many items outside of groceries that are still cheaper up there than down here....just depends on what you're looking for...
