Hi Guys, liking the new forum.

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with companies who organise events, specifically expos. We've an idea for an exhibition and we're wondering how it works organising it through an exhibition company. It is a case of going to them with the idea and asking them to run if for you in return for payment? And how much do they actually do - e.g. do they go as far as contacting potential exhibitors and getting them on board or is it just the set-up and build etc.?

Basically if anyone has any experience of dealing with the like of Expo Exhibitions or Exhibitions Ireland we'd love to hear about it. Obviously the best way to find out about how they work would be to contact them directly but we're a bit wary about putting the idea out there too soon. The companies we have contacted are unwilling to give info without hearing the full idea etc. Any help would be really appreciated.

I don't have experience with exhibitions, but my experience with event management companies in running conferences and seminars was poor. It took as much time to tell them what needed to be done, as it would to do the bloody thing ourselves. They didn't really add value.

@SerialComplaint: Not sure how comparing event management companies that run seminars to exhibition organisers that run exhibitions is relevant in this case! Exhibitions are a different beast.

Have had small dealings with Expo in the past and found them quite professional and know what they are doing - they've been around quite a long time too and that's a good sign, particularly in this current climate. They run the hugely successful Bloom show so that will give you an idea of the level they are at. I can understand their reluctance to give you too much info without hearing your idea as they might think you will head off and do the gig yourself armed with all the info they have just given you (I know it's happened to me before)!

You have 2 options at this stage: try and pull it together yourself and risk making a balls of it or engaging one of the specialist companies and let them take the headache on for you. Traditionally they will handle everything from booking exhibitors, advertising and venue selection to the full production of the event including the design and build of the exhibition, shell scheme, electrics, H&S, security, etc, etc. That said, you can decide with them how much or how little they do for you and the end cost will reflect this.

Word to the wise: DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE what is involved in putting a successful exhibition together!

Best of luck with the show OP - hope you get it off the ground.
