I realise this is probably the wrong forum but its the best I can think of. Posting here as I have found this forum helpful before. Mods feel free to move to a more correct location.

Anyway, last night my wife logged onto her hotmail account and changed her password. Approx 1 hour later she went back on to log in and realised she couldn't remember the new password.

In addition she cannot remember her security question answer and never provided an alternate email account. The account is at least 5-6 years old.

We have tried many variations of the old password, thinking she just altered it. No luck. The PC doesn't has the password saved. It sounds mad (and to head off the loud critics) but she is under a huge amount of stress due work at the moment which lead to this error/mix-up. She hadn't been thinking straight for a week or two....

Is there any way to retrieve a lost password in this manner.....or she fecked?

They do have a support function where they can help you. It's slow as an other person actually emails you back and can take up to 72 hours to get a response but is prob your best bet.

First go here get your ip:
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/

This happend to a friend of mine.
They will ask you for an ip address which you logged in recently.
Home broadband users usually have dynamic ip so this means your ip at home could change every day or two.
Maybe if your wife logs into her email at work it may have a static ip at work.

Next they will ask you for contacts and emails in her inbox.

Make a detailed list for them.

If they come back unsatisfied all is not lost provide them with an alternative email and be persistant and give them lots of detail if they request information.

With persistence they will reset it eventually

    Thanks guys.

We emailed the help desk/support function.
    Just waiting on a response.

IP wise she only uses laptop at home on her own or my laptop.
Recent emails should be easy as she had sent a few earlier in the evening so has a solid record of them. Just have to wait for hotmail to believe her and reset.

    Thanks for the advice!
