Does anyone know if the short stay zones & desk reserve services will be reintroduced anytime soon? These both seem like CRITICAL services the closer we all get to exams etc & it seems ridiculous that they have removed both. Ive emailed the library about it already and nearly three weeks on, have yet to recieve a reply

pretty sure that desk reserve books remain short term loans even though they are kept in the main library section.

Yep man they are, but as a lot of the books that were in the desk reserve system are in high demand and so there is a hold list of 32 people who get a particular book before me, just as an example! so I have to wait 32 days???? seems very illogical to get rid of the desk reserve system. not very student orientated!!

Short Stay Zone is still there. Don't know if it's enforced though.

But there are no notices in the area anymore to say that those particular desks are in a short-stay zone...so I'd have assumed it's the same as the rest of the library now, as in the 30-minute rule is all that applies to it.

Desk reserve HAS to be brought back..! Have to go out and buy a book to finish an assignment as the library made me give my copy back and told me i won't be able to have it again until after the due date for my assignment!

I'm pretty sure "short-stay" seats are still there...well there were seats a few days ago with signs on them sayin that if you get up you forfeit the place automatically...I'd had never seen them before so they caught my attention!

Yeah, saw them today. I hadn't been in for a few days when I posted, but I didn't see them at that stage ;)

We need to bring back desk reserve! I have not been able to get my hands on any books for two of my subjects, I cant even put a hold request on them because it is exceeded the maximum hold requests allowed. Looks like I'll have to buy them for the sake of a few weeks even though I seriously cant afford it :(

THings have got moving on the Desk Reserve front. There has been a load of bull**** reasons put forward why it has been removed. Contact your class rep and ask them to contact the head of your dept/s e.g. History and in turn ask them to e-mail Emmet Connelly of the SU.

Emmet is going to negotiate with managment about it. The Psychology head has already e-mailed him and is supporting the return of DR. It may be too late for semester 1 but it will be great for semester 2 if it's back.

Just to point out, about 4 weeks ago the Law dept. got their own mini DR because they made a fuss about it.

    Get crackin folks.

The SU are gonna try and add Psychology to this system that's why it is important that class reps contact all relevant depts. to ensure that management are told everyone wants it back not just the top two users of DR (Law and Psychology).

Contact those reps while the momentum is building. Don't miss out on the opportunity people.

    Bitching will achieve nothing.

Can somebody explain what desk reserve is? I'm a class rep and willing to help bring it back, but my case would be better if I knew what I was talking about :)! Thanks!

It was a service on the ground floor where scarce books were available for limits from one hour to 24 so everyone got access. Generally people just photocopied what they needed and it was available again.

This stopped people sitting in library using books without checking them out, hiding them etc. It was just removed this year.

Page 11 of the last SIN outlines the advantages in more detail.

It's useful when there is 3-4 books to share among hundreds of students.

Some were even on a 3hour loan which was handy if you just needed it for a bit and then you had even more chance of getting a book you really need.

    Bring it baaaack!

Have many of you contacted your class rep about this? I know of a few depts. being contacted now, but the more the merrier and all that.

In negotiation with library staff and academic staff nothing finalised as yet maybe in the New year it might be sorted.
