Alcohol advertising outside third level institutes?

Not sure where exactly this post should go, but I was wondering its legal/appropriate for businesses to advertise alcohol sales through distributing flyers outside third level institutes where some people are under the legal age.

I just thought it was a bit inappropriate but wasn't sure of where things stood from a legal position? I know the institute itself has had problems with them leafleting inside the ground before and had to request that those giving out the leaflets to leave the grounds.

There are ads for alcohol on television, in newspapers, magazines, etc, so do you think that persons under the age of 18 will never view any of those? Of course it's not illegal. Minors could view any advertisement, for any product, no matter how inappropriate it may be.

If the people distributing the leaflets are on college property without permission, then that's a different story, and they can be asked to leave. If they're doing in a public place, off college property, then that's the joys of capitalism for you.

Obviously they're not supposed to, and there's a number of voluntary codes of conduct when it comes to advert content and broadcast timing.

I just thought it was a bit ridiculous considering all the stereotypical stuff about young people and especially third level students getting tanked which people would moan about, yet there's people giving out drinks promotion leaflets at the entrances to colleges. So much for all the lip service to responsible drinking.

Let the college in question know: most of them dislike this activity at their gates.

Not a Consumer Issue. Let's try Legal Discussion for this one, perhaps?
