Just wondering if anyone could help me with my keyboard.

I'm typing this on the on-screen keyboard. My keys are gone wonky. It's not on num lock but when i press certain letters about 3 letters come up or a symbol. for eample when i press 'm' i get 'hmn', when i press 'v' i get 'gv' and the space bar is now the enter key etc.

    It's a dell inspiron 1520.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Any liquid spilled on it? Was it dropped?

It could be (a) keyboard has come out of it's connection, (b) keyboard is fubar (c) driver for the keyboard is corrupt/missing or (d) keyboard controller on your laptop is fubar. From what you said I'd say it's the last of the 4.

Sounds like you might need a dialing wand..

If it's an external keyboard (USB / P/S2), you could try connecting it to another machine to see if the problem still exists.

EDIT: Never mind.. just noticed it's an Inspiron Laptop.

Have a USB keyboard you can try?

Yeah.. or (might be a bit cheeky) but go into your local PC World and plug the keyboard out of one of their machines and into yours as a test.

You'll have it tested before they realise! ;)

I picked up a USB keyboard for about €3 before on Ebay though.

I'll bring it into work tomorrow and try a keyboard in there.

    Thanks for the tips.

sounds most likely you need a new keyboard
but i would disconnect it and give it a good shake to ensure there is nothing interfering with it and then make sure the connection is secure

Might seem like a strange question but are you using the original power adapter?

If yes, is it in perfect working order? Correct voltage output? No fraying on the cable?

If not, check the voltage output. Multimeter will help you out.

Edit: If you can try an ubuntu live cd and see what happens typing in that environment. If it's the same, then it's hardware based and most likely faulty keyboard or keyboard controller.
