Can an ordinary joe but a repo car from a repo company?
If so are they much cheaper and is there many plavces that do them?

I'm not definite, but I'd presume they auction them.

If so, than any ordinary Joe can buy them, but the way auction prices have gone recently (due to ordinary Joes buying cars at auction, mostly) it's often not worth your while.

I know someone who bought a repo'd Merc, but had a contact in the bank who had the finance on it and they let him know, he approached the bank and offered to buy it, negotiations were done and he got the keys to it a few weeks back..

By his own admission, he was lucky, his contact in the bank helped him with it, 99% go to auction..

The repo co is just the contractor to regain posession of the vehicle, so you can't buy from them.
The Financial institution as the owners will sell vehicles to you, if you approach them and ideally have a contact in there.

Are the cheaper? yeah, can be - you'll avoid auction fee's/vat stuff like that and can haggle with owner as opposed to fighting off other bidders in a heated staged auction enviroment.
I've bought 4x4's etc from banks etc........no hassles.
Plus, you can go to the banks compound and inspect the vehicle more than you'll ever get to do at auction.

It's like most things in life, if you don't ask, you don't get
