Xbox 360 Arcade - €99.99 - Tesco Extra, Naas (from tomorrow)

Not the greatest bargain as it's an old model but at least it's not second hand. Tesco Extra in Naas (which they claim will be irelands biggest Tesco) is opening tomorrow 1st November and they have this arcade model with sega superstar tennis included for €99.99.

Considering the old hard drive addons are no doubt soon being discontinued, they can be found pretty cheap (i know the 250gb is under €100 anyway and the old 20gb could be gotten for pennies practically with a bit of searching).
Could also be a good christmas present for a child.

If you're buying this for a kid of yours I'd advise you to buy the xbox 360 pro(it comes with extra controller & headset & hard drive)
I don't like to see parents buying the xbox arcade for their kids and then realise they have to fork out a good bit more buying the extra seperate

and as for you TV.. your always following were those old xboxes are!! haha

I saw this in a brochure with offers celebrating the opening of Tesco Extra in Naas so would be doubtful this is nationwide.

As for extras, the 20gb HDD is £24 on amazon and the 250gb is £65. If you just want to play online and maybe download the odd bit of DLC the 20gb should do you grand, which would make the whole package a pretty good offer. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=xbox+360+hard+drive&x=0&y=0) It comes with a wireless controller and headset so all you'd really need is a HDMI cable which can be got for a couple of euro. In fact if you were getting the 20gb hdd from amazon, you could add on a £2/3 HDMI cable bringing you past the £25 and hence getting free delivery

Just a note lads....you need a HDD to go on xbox live....that model doesnt have a HDD.

You can still go online, you just cant download anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭Jaafa

Yes but without at least a memory stick you wont be able to save any of your online progress.

The xbox arcade doesn't come with a headset.. bought two of them last week and there was none in them

Ehh, what? The Arcade somes with 256MB or 512MB of internal memory, of which around 190MB or 450MB is usable by the owner. There's plenty of room for savegames and even a small xbox live arcade game there.

    xbox360-arcade-stock.jpg

This is what usually comes in the Arcade pack. No HD component cable (Red/Green/Blue RCA plugs) and no headset.

Speaking from experience and that of some friends you're better off shelling out the extra for a newer model as I can say with a good 80% certainty you'll be sending this off for repair or just buying an entirely new model.

These are jasper models, the most reliable of the old revisions. Or at least I'll be looking for Jaspers.

Just on the playing online/saving games issue...

It is possible to save games with the supplied memory unit and it is possible to play most games online without a hard drive but some such as halo reach require a hard drive.

You can still go online, you just cant download anything.

USB memory stick or external hard drive can be used up to 16gb these days on them once fully updated.

Anybody been up there yet? I'd be curious to know how much they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

I grabbed four off the shelf at 9:30am, the shop had been open since 8am and was pretty busy but mostly with women after dropping the kids to school. They didn't seem very interested in the consoles, but the TVs were flying off the shelves.

There were around 12 left on the shelf when I left. No idea if there are more in the back.

Beside the Xbox's were there any other decent deals?
You mentioned TVs - any other details?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭Cudders

Not really a great price for these at this stage I don't think you could probably get a new slim Xbox Arcade with a game or two online for about €150 I've seen a few posted here in recent weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

I didn't see any others MaceFace, it was only the salesman who said it to me that they were gone. I went in for the xbox consoles only.

@Cudders: These aren't just any old xbox, they're the last of a disappearing breed, they're special :D

Yeah, the headset is just for voice communications.
You can get a years online for less than €40 e.g. here
Also, if you aren't going to be playing online, you don't need gold, Silver which is free allows you to download demo's etc.
And you should probably get a free months trial of Gold with a new console, you certainly used to.

It has a 512mb of memory I think, something like that. I have one but I put a hard drive in it.

not special in terms of piracy. Have a look at console modding forum. Look for thread with JTAG in the title

Indeed, I grabbed them so I could JTAG them, not so I could modify their firmware to play backups or pirated games. If I was interested in those sort of things I would skip these and grab a slim because there'll be CFW out for that soon enough.

I have faith that there'll be nice homebrew apps out for the 360 in the future, even if right now the scene's being overshadowed by the PS3 :p

Ah deadly. I'll take an aul trip down later. Is this Tesco a 24/7 like the Maynooth one. Does the extra in Tesco extra mean there 24/7 or is there any difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Extra implies the bigger walmart-type store. And yes, it is 24 hours :)

Fairly sure all Tesco stores lock up the electronics cages in the back at 10pm. So while there was none left, there would also be nobody to check for you either so they could have spun you a yarn. Try again today :)
