    Hi all,

    I'm a newish user of Ubuntu operating system. I have a 3G USB card from 3 Mobile but I'm unsure as to how to install it.

    On a Windoze OS, you just plug the card in, it'll will autoplay and you can use it straight away. When I plug it into my laptop running Ubuntu it sees it as a flash drive and I can see the files on it but they're just the usual .exe files.

    Any help as I am :confused: Thanks.

    K

    1. Right click on the network icon in your taskbar, select "Enable Mobile Broadband" (if there's already a tick beside it go to step 2!)
    2. Left click on the icon and you should see "New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection", click on that then go through the setup, hopefully that should get it going.

    well after a long install and a reboot

    it's usually a quicker setup on linux

    newer 3G cards have linux software on the card

    No option for Enable Mobile Broadband when right clicking. However, if I select 'Edit Connections' there is a tab for Mobile connection. I went through the motions of selecting the 3 network etc. etc. but when I connect the USB card, I get the 3 icon on the desktop I can right click on it and select the option to run autorun prompt. Getting error 'cannot find autorun program'.

    Autorun is Windows thing I believe, not sure why it popped up in the ubuntu menu... maybe I'm wrong.
    I just tested my bros old Meteor Huawei USB thing in Mint 9, and "Enable Mobile Broadband" showed up, maybe 3 use different USB sticks?

    Can you plug in the 3G USB then open a terminal and type in lsusb and post the output?
    So the 3 network shows up in Mobile Broadband tab in Network Connections?

    Post some screenshots!

    You don't get something like this?
    new-mobile-broadband.png
    That launches the setup wizard, then something like this should appear:

    background - there are two USB devices in the dongle - CDROM and modem and you need to switch device into other mode

    easier fix
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7622263&postcount=3

    short version
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install udev-extras
    echo 'SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1446", SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1", RUN+="/lib/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type option-zerocd"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/45-huawei1550.rules

    Hi lads,

    sorry for the late reply and thanks for the advice so far.

    Ran the code in terminal, which seemed to run OK. Should the 3g card start automatically when I plug it in?
