I am buying a used car from a dealer next Wednesday. The thing is the motor tax is expired from the 9/10. What can I do to get it taxed as soon as possible? Also will I have to pay the tax for the car for the two months it was not taxed?

    Thanks.

You need to wait until you get the Vehicle License Cert back and then go to your local tax office. You won't be responsible for the back tax, you will only be liable from the time you own the vehicle.

If you get stopped by guards just explain you have only bought the car. The car should be transferred into your name from Wednesday next, this will be on the log book details. When you go to the motor tax office they will see this on their system.
It takes about 2 weeks to get the log book to you.

I'd ask the seller to pay for 3 motnhs road tax (you could reimburse him for this), and wait a couple of days so he has the disc before buying the car.

If you decide to pick up the car with expired tax, make sure you have a written, dated bill of sale. The cops get the "I just bought the car" story all the time.

You need to wait until you get the Vehicle License Cert back and then go to your local tax office. You won't be responsible for the back tax, you will only be liable from the time you own the vehicle.

To be precise - not liable from the time he bought vehicle but from the begining of the month in which he bought the vehicle.
So if he bought vehicle today (31st Oct) he'd be responsible for tax from the beginning of October.
Obviously if he didn't use the car in October (means today) he can declare he didn't use it and avoid paying motor tax for October.

Answering the OP - if you buy untaxed car, you are not able to tax it for the next few weeks, as you need your VRC to do it, which will come in post in few weeks. Going further - as you are not able to tax it, you don't have tax on it, so you are unable to drive it legally on the road.
Whatever anyone tells you that it's fine to do it - NO, IT ISN'T.
You are breaking the law if you use your freshly bought without a tax. And you can't help it, as you need to wait for paperwork to arrive.

    Stupid, isn't it?

Obviously yes, that's why if stopped by Garda, in most cases they will understand and let you go. But it's completely up to their good will.
If they want to do you for not having tax - they can.
