    Fair play.

Be funny seeing the Gards in a pimped out X5 though!:D

Can only think this had more to do with getting under their [the gangs] skin than anything else, not that there's anything wrong with that!!

I read something about that the other day. The were seized from 2 Irish criminals.

They do this in Bulgaria as well. Apparently it really annoys the criminals to see Police travelling in their vehicles. As this country's criminals' activities begin to resemble those of the Russian Mafia, it is probably a good thing that the Gardai's tactics take on a hint of the Eastern European

at a guess I'd say it's because if they went up for auction and a criminal gang bought them it'd be a PR disaster,
and also exporting them wouldn't be worth while and we'd only get a fraction of the value for them

    Irish state-1 scumbags-0

    Result!...quite refreshing that :D

Armoured vehicles are actually quite easy to come upon, the scummers can just get their own. I saw an armoured Merc G-Wagen up for sale earlier in the year, it had belonged to the Turkish Embassy in Dublin.

The only reference I can find on it is a cached google page http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:jEvtesLG368J:www.kugli.com/Classified_Ads/adid/368342/adtitle/Armoured_Mercedes_G_Wagen_B6_Right_Hand_Drive/+armoured+g+wagen+turkish+embassy+dublin&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

Alternatively, all the prestige manufacturers will knock you one up

The MOD auctions in the UK regularly sell armoured ex police and army vehicles, strangely often things like Mondeos and Lagunas, as well as the occasional range rover and X5 of course.

Taxpayer - 0. These X5's are much heavier because of all the armour and will burn 2 or 3 times the amount of fuel as a normal Garda car, they should have been crushed.

if they save some poor Guards life in moyross one night then I'll gladly hand my tax money over for that

Are you for real????????? Even if they weren't armourplated, they're being used instead of buying a new Landcruiser (circa €50k+). Thats a hell of a lot of fuel!

and factor in the cost of training a very non bulletproof member of the ERU if he gets shot...how much does that cost???

the ERU,and all units should have every and any tool available to them to do their job effectively and get the murder rate down in this country
    recession or no recession

Very common in the US, though often they're 'exhibition cars' as opposed to patrol cars if they're particularly unusual or expensive.

Where else are the police going to get their unmarked, non-fleet vehicles, though? If you want to be inconspicuous, use the local drug dealer's old Nissan Sentra, not an unmarked Crown Vic.

Even nicer if they were driven up and down Hyde Road all day just to stick Wayne and his lackies noses in it.

Anything else could be had off the crims to help the cause of law enforcement?

Take their houses and put aerials on top for Garda radio reception?
