Ring your insurance company in advance, just agree at time with them to transfer the policy over to the new car. Just make sure you have your old car at the dealership at the agreed time of the transfer.

You bring the Vehicle Registration Cert or log book of the old car with you too and give it to the dealer. The dealer will get you to sign the change of ownership section on the log book of your new car. They will then send it off to the DOE in Shannon who will in turn post you out a new one. You will then be the new registered owner of the new car.

Make sure and get a receipt for the purchase of the new car from the dealer with their name and address on it plus the date & time on it in the event they delay in sending the log book off to Shannon and your old car is caught speeding or going through tolled roads.
