Opinion on drive way length

I was wondering what peoples opinions are on driveway length.

We are trying to choose a site on the family farm at home. There are two possibilities one which is near the public road c100m and also near the existing farm house and buildings.

The alternative is to put the house at the other end of the farm which is 700m in from the public road. This would require the building of a 700m drive way, but would provide more isolation and privacy. Also good for views, shelter and aspect.

Wondering what fellow boardies think, especially people who have built their own houses.

There are several houses around here with driveways that sort of length, mostly just made of 804 type gravel as they are shared with farm traffic. One neighbour has a 500m drive that he had tarmacced, he has had to patch a couple of sections over time as the base sunk a bit.

The only real question is, is it worth the extra cost?

There is definintly a fair bit of extra cost. Probably 20-25k depending on finish. That said in the long term cost will will be forgotten and you will be living with your location decision.
Trying to decide which is best from a living point of view.
