The young lad is looking for a new hurling helmet (amongst plenty other things) for xmas, he wants a cooper but there is no way he is getting one if there is an insurance implication. Mycro and Marc seem to be the most popular from a safety view. Any other helmets meet the standard?

If you want to be 100% sure of meeting insurance requirements, buy the helmet through your club, they should be the suppliers of your playing insurance as well so that's a fallback for you in case of any queries around playing equipment.

Otherwise, whatever helmet you get has to be is355 compliant, once it is that you are covered. The guidelines to ref's in regards to the new rules is that you don't have the check the type/make/certification of any helmet, just that it has to cover the head with a faceguard, in the case of an incident that would go in report where the helmet is queried, the example that was given was a player suffered a head injury after colliding with an opponent, you don't need to mention details of the helmet, the assumption is always made that the player was wearing a helmet, if the insurance company wishes to query anything they can do something after the event.

I've benn checking out a few websites which sell hurling helmets and gaa goods to see where the best value is for buying hurling helmets (approved). I checked out gaastore, handcrafthurleys, elverys and prices were much the same. The best deal by far i came across was for a package consisting of Helmet, hurley, grip, sliotar all for €80.00. The site was www.irishhurleys.ie .Very good value and definitely worth looking at for anyone in the market for helmet and hurleys for xmas. Any other good value gaa sites?

I saw a special report at the start of the 2010 league on this, on that League Sunday programme on RTE!

They said that Marc, Azzurri, and Mycro were the helmets that complied with insurance requirements. Not sure if any other helmet manafacturers product has since met that standard!
