Yeah you can.I have caught many hoodies with a magpie call bird. I remember a local keeper telling me a long time ago you wont catch magpies with a grey crow but . This would appear to be true to a certain extent as i recall only catching 2 magpies with a crow call bird in the last 16 years.;)

To date we've caught two magpies with grey crow call birds so it's possible. I'd prefer a larger cage than the standard shop bought one for the GC's, which are a lot bigger than magpies. Not sure on carrion and other crows.

Carrion Crows are merely a sub-species of the Hoody which replace the latter over England and other parts of Western Europe and are identical to the Hoodie apart from color(they regulary interbreed in areas where both ranges meet like Southern Scotland). In any case there very scarce in Ireland and only regulary turn up along the East coast - good work with the Larsen trap by the way since I've heard its hard to trap Mags using Hoodies:)

    Hi thekevin450,

This is the second time you have referred to 'looping' a crow. What do you mean by that term? Just curious cos I never heard it used before.

Hooded crows and Carrion crows are now considered separate species.

I'll need some help trapping these hoodies, once the old man starts feeding the cattle nuts the come in flocks or 10's or 20's. I only get one shot with the .223 :D, a good trap should top that!

To date we have caught young foxes, cats, rats, crows, jackdaws, greycrows, ravens as well as magpies in our larsen traps. Getting the call bird is the hard part. A larsen baited with eggs or rabbit roadkill does the trick to help catch a call bird..

    Yes, both sparrowhawks and buzzards.

I caught a female sparrowhawk at the beginning of this year. There was a rather tense five minute stare-off as I held the door open for her and she thought about, a) savaging my bare fingers or b) making good her escape :D

Got some nice photos but I won't put them up as they'll be used by some people for the wrong reasons.

if you make a loop of strong fishing line i use 15/20 lb put food inside it and a small bit around it. whan a bird stands in it you pull it and it gets cot around its lag and you pull it in . i catch pigeons crows jackdaws sometimes magpies it will work with evry thing from that size up
