Windows 7 Audio issue - Help

I have a dell inspiron 6400 laptop running windows 7 professional and there is no sound for the past few days. On the speaker icon in the right hand corner there is white x on a red circle and when I hover the mouse over it a message comes up saying " No audio output device is installed". In the device manager there is a yellow exclamation remark by the installed driver (sigma Tel high definition audio codec) which is the recommended driver for my laptop but the status is showing up as "cannot load" "the driver maybe corrupted or missing" then when I click on repair drivers it tells me there is nothing wrong, anyway after numerous downloads and message board discussions the problem still persists and I am at wits end. Could anyone shed any updated light on what seems to be a very common problem with windows 7, Cheers.
