What's the deal with penalties for late submissions?

Got to the dropbox around 5-10 mins before the deadline yet the lecturer had left for the weekend and taken everything out of it. Not wanting him to find my essay on Monday and assume I'd submitted it late I spoke to someone else in the department and they took my name down, although I'm not sure how effective it will be seeing as she spoke to someone on the phone and told them I was there at 5:02 despite having been standing there talking to her for a good 5 mins.

Also, will it be okay for me to leave all my lectures ten minutes early and maybe take an extra ten minutes in my exam, seeing as apparently deadlines are flexible

I used to just slip it under the door. You could email the lecturer in question.

Aye but then I could well have taken an extra 2 days to complete the assignment and would, quite rightly, be penalised.

Any idea what the actual 'penalties' are for late submission?? What percentage it is of the actual grade?

^^depends on the lecturer. sometimes the max you get is 40%, other lecturers won't even consider late submissions. check blackboard or ask your lecturer

OP, better email the lecturer asap, saying you were there before the deadline. better do it soon. it'll look better than him receiving it during the weekend or on monday

As Whiteman says, completely depends on the lecturer. Some won't take them in, others will give you a bit of leeway before progressively docking marks, others will give you a max of 40%.

They have a fair bit of discretion on the matter.

A deadline is a deadline. Personally if I were a lecturer, I wouldnt accept any late submissions without a damn good excuse. It's not a competition to see who can get closest to the deadline before submitting, there are no rules stopping you from submitting early if you dont think you'll get it in before the deadline.

But I'm just in a cranky mood. I'll probably change when I miss a deadline later this month.

Not relevant to the thread really, as I was 10 minutes before the deadline.
