Strange Business Practice or not?

    Hi Guys,

    I've been trying to find the best prices around for printing my stationary this week. I found digiprint to be the best price for what i was looking for, which was fine. When i asked the guy i was dealing with to place the order, he asked me to pay in full before anything was to go ahead.

    I took me back abit i have to say, if he asked me for a 10% or 20% deposit i wouldn't have minded, but to pay it all up front before i've even seen a proof or the final product seemed abit strange.

    I would never ask a customer to pay in full before i had finished a job, it doesn't seem right.

    Now, maybe i'm over reacting here but i just wanted other peoples opinion to see what you all think? Is it right or wrong?

    I see it in a good few places. For custom orders of goods it weeds out timewasters or the chance of people not collecting the goods.

    Wouldn't call it strange anyway.

    If the customer paid 10, 20, 50% or whatever deposit, there's still a chance that they mightn't show or at least may not call back straight away for the goods. Good for cash flow of the printer, it cuts down the "we agreed x amount, and the artwork was def included" disputes, and also haggling as well I'd imagine.

    i do custom photo printing and framing etc

    Most of my customers pay up front

    if i do a job for someone and they dont pay, i have wasted material etc that are not resellable


    its common practice in the print industry

    when you deal with a printer for a while then you would get to do things on account

    Well maybe things have changed due to our current circumstances but i have dealt with alot of different printers and i have never had to pay anything up front! Ever...

    Anyway, it's their porogative to do so, so it's up to them!

    But i would never ask for full payment up front...

    If you have been hunting out the best prices, don't be surprised if you are asked to pay up-front. It costs a company at least 1.2 percent a month to give credit. There is also a management overhead with issuing purchase orders, etc., which could easily amount to a cost of 20 or 30 euros for the printer to deal with the order.

    So if you want the best price and not too much service, I think this is ok. If you want more service, and some credit, I think you would be better dealing with a local printer who might be more expensive, but maybe it is worth the extra for you.
