Confused about DTT

Just following on from the Saorview trial thread in the telly forum, i'm confused about a few things about Saorview and DTT.
The setup at my parents house is that the telly is connected to an indoor aerial in the attic to receive analogue RTE/TV3 although that's a bit of a snowy picture. The telly is also connected to a satellite box to receive UTV/BBC/C4 etc, all the FTA channels (no Sky subscription)
Am i right in thinking that the satellite box won't be able to receive/decode the DTT signal...? And that they'll need an additional box (STB) plugged into the telly to get digital RTE. the telly's old, so no MPEG4 tuner built in.

Is DTT available on satellite or what exactly is it? really confused about all this digital crossover.
    thanks

The T (1st one) in DTT stands for Terrestrial -> i.e. ground based, no satellite, can only be picked up with an aerial. The one in your parents attic that is already picking up the Analog signal should be perfect, all you'll need is the set top box

DTT is digital TV through your aerial so no it's not available on satellite. An MPEG4 set top box will be needed such as this one: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23&brands=WALKER

    DTT = Digital Terrestrial Television

Terrestrial = Belonging to the Ground. It comes via aerial not dish.

So yes you need either a New TV or a box like a Satellite box, except for TV aerial instead of dish.

Thanks, was a bit confused about the whole thing.

Will one STB do two tellys? we've the aerial split between the kitchen and sitting room or will we need seperate boxes for each. i'd say they'll be getting one new telly as one of them is really old, and have to fiddle around with it to stop it going snowy.

no, you would need one STB for each TV*... unless the TV itself is Saorview certified.

Really a setbox per TV is best. Otherwise both TVs have same channel. many Setboxes don't have modulators.

might be a silly question-do ya need a specific ariel for DTT or will a roof top 'high gain' ariel do the job??

Generally an aerial that works for TV3 or TG4 works. Even if it's slightly snowy.

There is no such thing as a digital aerial. Indoor and outdoor aerials on this page http://www.techtir.ie/radio-tv/uhf-aerials

    and here some info http://www.techtir.ie/saortv

Not clear if that STB has MHEG or not.

watty, with a MPEG4 tv, you still need the aerial, right? you can't receive the signal with the telly on its own. the MPEG4 tv just replaces the need for a STB.

i think my parents would be better off getting a new aerial as the one in the attic gets very bad reception, sometimes RTE does get very snowy, and it's the one we've always used for as long as i can remember

Ariel is a washing powder and will not do the job.

DTT does not need a specific aerial as long as the existing aerial is the right group.

Only very recently a Washing powder

    Ariel
    • an angel in Judaism, Christianity (Gnostic) & occult lore (Hebrew meaning of 'lion of God')
    • an evil angel and pagan god in John Milton's Paradise Lost
    • the in-house magazine of the BBC, named after
    • a character in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest who is a messenger
At the end of Act 5 Prospero retires his magic by breaking his magical staff, removing his cloak, and “…drown[ing] my book.” Upon ridding himself of his magical forces, he releases Ariel, the magical spirit whom he has enslaved throughout the play.

Arial is a Sans-serif font. Very like this. You may even be reading this in Arial

An Aerial is an interface between Alternating Radio Frequency current or voltage and a Medium (or vacuum) allowing Electromagnetic Waves (Radio, Light, UV and X-Rays are all simply different frequencies or wavelengths of Electromagnetic Waves, which can also be modelled as "photon" particles.

An Antenna is just an alternate fancy name for an Aerial. Some say should only apply to "feelers" of insects and not Aerials at all.

A dish or LNB is NOT an aerial or antenna. An LNB on a dish has two small aerials inside it, about 7mm long. An MMDS dish has an aerial at the focus. A dish is just a Mirror to concentrate the signal.
