I got an email that was sent to all undergraduates to work the open day. It looks legit but why do they need my pps no & mothers maiden name? Before I put myself forward I just wanted to make sure that I'm not being naive giving out my details.

Was wondering the same thing about the mother's maiden name... sounds a little suspicious.

There's nothing dodgy about the email at all, it's absolutely legit. Providing your PPS number is pretty standard if you want to get paid for a job. I'm not sure why the maiden name is required, but they wouldn't ask for it if it wasn't necessary.

I asked about the maidens name last year, and why it was needed. I also said that i wasnt giving it to them, and i put up a bit of a fight for it.
But for some reason the finance department requires it. Thats what I was told anyway.

So I was given a choice, dont give the name and dont get paid or give the name and get paid.

So i gave the name. Stephen and Ross will both give you that ultimatum.

but I think the mothers maiden name is only useful to people if they have your bank account number and sort code.

I seem to remember having to give my mothers maiden name when I registered, something to do w/ that maybe??

It's just a payment thing. Some companies just use it for financial processing, no big thing. I gave mine last year, no identity theft or anything... Yet :P
