    Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu (traditional Chinese hanzi: 古流沖縄手拳法術 ) translation; Old Style Okinawan Karate: is a synthesis and contemporary reinterpretation of those classical fighting arts handed down from later part of Okinawas old Ryukyu Kingdom.

    Restored, revived and systemized by Patrick McCarthy, Hanshi 8th Dan, the legacy of Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu can be traced back to China’s Qing Period (1644-1911) Fujian Chinese-based quanfa (kenpo) practices haphazardly introduced and secretly cultivated in Okinawa, during the later part of the old Ryukyu Kingdom.

    Originally pursued for its brutally effective defensive applications, Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu is based on the Fujian Chinese-based quanfa (kenpo) disciplines of
    (1) Hsing (Kata); the original Chinese defensive paradigms vigorously embraced by men of wealth and position;
    (2) Qinna (Torite); techniques of seizing and controlling employed by local law-enforcement officials;
    (3) Shuai Chiao (Tegumi); an old Chinese-based method of clinching & grappling practiced by boys and young men of every age;
    (4) Tigwa; a plebeian form of percussive impact brought to the island from the Kingdom of Siam and
    (5) Buki-gwa; the art of weapons.

    These practices were synthesized with the existing local defensive practices and were constantly reinterpreted by law-enforcement authorities and like-minded enthusiasts over time.

    Saturday 22nd January 2011 Seminar

    10am - 12.30pm covering Keri Waza (techniques of kicking) and Kamae Waza (defensve postures)
    Both Keri Waza and Kame Waza can be performed as ‘Kihon-waza Solo drills’ or as Futari Renzoku-geiko (2-person continuous reenactment drills), we hope to explore both on Saturday morning.

    1pm - 2.30pm for Bo work (Yamane Ryu)
    This class will introduce the learner to Yamane Ryu Bojutsu. In comparing this content with other styles it will become immediately apparent that there is a significant difference between modern kobudo and that of Oshiro-ha Yamaneryu. While an entire dissertation might better illuminate the obscurity surrounding this phenomenon, a simple explanation tells us that such differences came about largely due to kobudo unfolding alongside modern karate. In the same way that old-school Okinawan karate conformed to the powerful forces of Japanese-ness, so too was modern kobudo similarly influenced. Introduced to the mainland of pre-war Japan during an era of radical military escalation, the original practice & purpose of karate & kobudo took on characteristics uniquely Japanese and have, for the most part, remained that way.

    2.30pm - 4.30pm covering Nage Waza (throws and take downs)
    While we will not have sufficient time to complete the full Nage Waza two person drill, we will examine a number of techniques in detail and in the context of (HAPV) Habitual Acts of Physical Violence.

    The Nage Waza two person drill is an unique presentation on the principal throwing, take-down and techniques of balance displacement. Developed by Patrick McCarthy this two-person drill brings together no fewer than fifty-five different ways of displacing an opponent's balance. Nage-Waza provides learners of any rank and or style with an extraordinary repertoire of kata-based application practices.
    While nage-waza is not the principal source of self-defense used in the art of karate, it is, nonetheless, an indispensable component of effective fighting, and also reflects a forgotten aspect from this art’s early origins. Nage-waza is also something that every student of karate, irrespective of style or politics, should gain some level of proficiency in. As all domestic forms of self-protection can be bridged together by the same habitual acts of physical violence they seek to address, winding up in a clinch is sometimes an inevitable outcome. While almost everything we do in percussive impact-based traditions is to avoid ever getting into a standing clinch, if and when such a thing was to ever happen, taking immediate control of the situation is of the utmost importance, and it is at this point in time that nage-waza reveals its true value. We doubt anyone could dispute the sense it makes to be well prepared and never need nage-waza than to wind up in a standing clinch one day with the safety of your life or well-being left only to chance.

    I hope this give an idea of what the day will entail. All welcome but pre booking is essential
