How / should I delete cookies ?

    Installed a new anti-virus yesterday, and while it was doing scan, I noticed it spent nearly an hour scanning 'cookies' - was amazed just watching this that it seemed to remember sites I'd forgotten I'd been on from 2/3 years ago......

    Should I delete cookies ?
    How do I do it ?
    Will it mean I lose my auto-login to the likes of msn/skype/02/boards etc ?

    What else might I lose ?
    Will it speed up the computer ?

    Any advice grately received ! Thanks
