HBO has announced that polygamist drama Big Love will end in 2011.

E! Online reports that the show, which stars Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin, will end after the conclusion of its fifth season.

Creators Mark Olsen and Will Scheffer said in a statement: "When we created Big Love in 2002, we had a strong conception of the journey the Henrickson family would make over the course of the series, of the story we had to tell.

"While we were in the writers' room this year shaping our fifth season, we discovered that we were approaching the culmination of that story."

Sevigny, who plays one of the three Henrickson wives, said of the final run: "I think that finally you see the Henricksons having to deal with some consequences, for their actions and for their lifestyle. And they are finally getting a little bit of comeuppance."

The actress previously denounced the fourth season of Big Love as "awful".

I keep meaning to go back and watch this but other stuff gets in the way. By all accounts it should have been euthanised after season 3 though.

    Season 4 was terrible imo

Not sure I'd call this a "cancellation" in the typical manner... They are simply announcing a confirmed end for the show with a whole season to go, which IMO, is the best possible thing that can happen for any show, since it gives the writers time to properly end the various storylines, rather than end on some maddening cliffhanger/unresolved issue...

Then again, they could still screw things up anyway (I'm very bitter with "Lost" which was given a definite ending date earlier than any other show) but I wish US networks did this with more shows, rather than letting them go on past their prime and then canceling them abruptly...

Yep, Season 4 was pretty sh*t alright. I didn't like the way it ended either. I really enjoyed 1-3 and elements of 4 but I think it's about time to wrap it up now, given what happened in the last episode of 4,
    with them finally being exposed.

    When they killed off
    Harry Dean Stanton (Roman Grant)
it was the end for me.

I really like this show, even Season 4!

Season 1-3 were great, 4 not so much. I think 5 seasons will be enough. There's only so many stories you can tell about a polygymist family before it gets silly *cough* season 4 *cough*

Series one and two were great. Three was fantastic. Four was one of the worst and most sudden drops in quality I've ever seen. Hopefully they can pull it back for this last season and end on a return to form.

Fifth and final season air tonight.
Well, if nothing else, it'll be better than the pile of crap that was the fourth season. You know it ain't good when even the actors insult it.

It's a pity Chloe didn't have the stones to stand by her initial opinion, istead she caved like a little girl

Well I enjoyed Episode 1. I still hate Bill, more than ever now. I'm really hoping everything falls apart for him this season.

I was a big fan of the first 3 seasons, and then....

it kinda fizzled out didn't it,

i kinda knew it was always end with him being the prophet but expected more conflict between the compound and the family, albie grant was didn't go out with enough of a bang

think it was okay that he was killed by the neighbour, obviously seeded that story, but does that mean he's letting women into the priest hood and his daughters is going to become a polygamist?

Seeded? That ending came in with a row of anvils.

The Emma Smith x2 vision was his where he realised his church should have women priesthood holders, which was what he was writing in his yellow legal pad (golden tablets) before he left to pick up Lois. He just never got the chance to explain it to Barb, that's why he asked her for a blessing at the end.

And Sarah was never going to be a polygamist, Scott her husband is an ex(LDS)mormon, the two of them are most likely agnostic/atheist as Sarah said religion didn't mean anything to her and Scott when they were getting married. She just allowed Barb to bless her son because of what it would mean to Barb, in the same way that she allowed Bill to bless her wedding. It meant nothing to her but she wanted to make her parents happy.

she said something about her being back in the church

she said something about her being back in the church

They'd just had baby Bill's blessing, which Barb officiated. It doesn't mean Sarah joined the church just that she allowed her recently widowed mother to bless her first grandson. It also showed that Barb was finally someone that Sarah could respect because she'd never come to terms with her family entering polygamy, it disgusted her, and meant she couldn't have the relationship she wanted with Barb. Now that she sees that Barb is happy, she can respect her and build a relationship with her.

There wasn't much Oompff! in the finale. Or maybe that's just me [giveup] Anyone know the piece of music playing over the Wives car ride? It sounds so familiar.

I didn't know that it was going to be the last episode, until the last few minutes of watching it, so I was very surprised indeed by the ending. Not sure what to make of it really.
Going to miss the show. It was very thought provoking, although it did make me angry sometimes I really enjoyed it. I tend to keep away from forums like this and even googling about shows as I hate having an inkling of what's going to happen on what I watch:cool:

The show took such a dip in the last two seasons that I was actively rooting for Albie to take them all out on a killing spree. 1/5 dead isn't too bad of a total.

I was reading the TWOP forums and it seems that Dustin Lance Black (the writer of Milk) was involved with Big Love for the 1st three years, moving up as high as co-producer in S3. But he left the show as his career moved on after his Oscar win. He was also the only person on the show with a Mormon background. So the guess is that the show taking a dive as he departed may not be a coincidence.
