BoI switching to Visa Debit

Im with Ulster Bank - they also switched to Visa Debit - same as lazer - no difference!

Girl in ALDI checkout kinda looked at me funny when I handed it to her but I explained its a Debit not a Credit Card - she stuck it into the machine and all was fine.

You won't notice any difference - tis the same as the old Lazer Card:D

Except that you can use a visa debit to buy stuff online where visa is accepted (every site?) so stuff like buying flights etc...

Quite a few (notable) differences in terms of use, acceptance, protection on purchases etc..

Good news. AIB and NIB is surely have to follow on :)

If Laser were a proper Maestro debit card, then it would be as usable as a Visa debit card (online, international, etc), but it's not. Laser needs to get it's act together, though it's probably too late for that.

Good to see the bank making the move to Visa. You have to wonder what future lies for Lazer?

This is the start of the end for Laser, sure their owners (the Irish banks) are starting to convert to another service provider (visa).

    Looks finished to me.

NIB and AIB will be the only ones offering a Laser card.

    Ireland-only.

And you cannot use it for online purchases except for a few Irish oriented retailers, if you want to order something for example from a german or american website then it won't work. It doesn't even work properly in Atm machines abroad. See my thread here about my recent frustrations in Australia with it. Good riddance to bad rubbish is my opinion of the Laser card.

Not even that. Most Maestro accepting websites tend to be geared for UK Maestro cards (due to size of market) Other Maestro cards from other countries are still out in the cold. If they went to Debit Mastercard, then we're talking as usable as Visa Debit :)

Its about time they switched over they could of made up ground on the competition if they switched over earlier but sure thats a bank for you!

I'm amazed they didn't let staff know earlier. They say Autum 2011 but i'm sure something will cause a delay for the roll out.

Its a good move and has left lazer to reconsider their position and I'm sure AIB NIB and EBS will follow suit.
AIB could go down the route of Mastercard debit cards read somewhere that Mastercard approached AIB and BOI to try get their debit cards in the Irish market.

AIB are moving as well. With the two large banks going, Laser's days are numbered.

Not that most people will notice (other than being perhaps confused and accusing their bank of somehow trying to rip them off etc). In 99% of cases, they are the same thing.

I'm new to the whole Visa Debit card thing, so excuse my ignorance.
Say I'm going to New York, Paris or something does that mean I can now just load my account full of cash and pay for everything with my Visa Debit card without having to carry cash around? I know in theory it works like that but the crux of my question will it be that simple or will I be charged X amount by BoI every time I pay for something and it'll end up costing me 40/50 euro just for the pleasure of using it abroad?

Yes, load your account full of cash as you cannot go overdrawn-unless you have that facility on your account.

As regards charges, you will need to check the T&Cs of each banks' cards as they all differ.

    Great news.

Timescale is bollox. If I hadn't ceased to be a student last month I'd have switched to Ulster Bank - only real thing keeping me with BOI is that I've been there for 12 years and I reckon that might stand to me if I need overdrafts etc...though I'm probably wrong there :P

oh thats great :D I didn't realise you could do that. I just thought it was an ordinary debit card for Ireland - same as Lazer. Now I am very happy!:D

Nope, not the same as limited Laser, it can be used anywhere there is a Visa logo.

The cost at the will be interesting point and I have serious doubts in this.

With the Laser for example I can withdraw money in the EUR Zone free of charge at any ATM. I bet that the Visa debit does charge for money withdraws.

So lets wait with the party until they surprise us with the T&Cs.

Does any other Visa debit holder have any T&C from his bank, since they might be all relative close in general to keep the competition?

    HI All

PTSB switched to Visa Debit about a month ago and its been a nightmare for us.

Have been declined in Argos,Supervalu, Petrol Stations and a few other places.
Also it did not work in Holland where my Laser used too.

    So its not all rosy
