Simple question here thats bugged me for a few weeks now. A mate off mine has an 95 reg 300 with close to 190k on the clock and after asking him when he intends to get the belt sorted he told me not for another while yet as he is under the unshakable impression that the belt jobs only need sorting every 100K. last job was doin at 135k. I think he is risking it big time but he insisted he is ok till 210k or 220k. Any comments from any one on this.... thanks. :)

Depends what belt he has in it, got this from google.

Timing Belt & Camshaft Sprocket 1993 and 1994-96 timing belts are non-interchangeable. 1993 belt
design was changed from a square or trapezoid type to a half circle or round type for 1994-96, This design extends service life of timing belt from 60,000 miles to 105,000 miles. Failure to install correct timing belt may result in a “whining” noise
from engine compartment after replacement Do not interchange individual components (timing belts, sprockets or tensioner
spring assembles) between 1993 and 1994-96 model vehicles. These parts are
    interchangeable as a set only.

So in other words if he has the square type belt it has to be replaced ever 60000miles or if he has the newer half circle design its 105000.
I'd say it should be alright for another while since his is a 1995 model.

Wouldn't there be a time factor to be considered too?

Thats a very good question but I never asked him, far as I can tell its being a few years as my mate has his car about 6 years now and when it was done by the last owner I simply have no idea.

The GS300 aren't known for issues with the camtrain, a 15 year old GS300 with 190K on it isn't a car I'd be investing a belt on if I was paying someone to do it. Not saying that's the way to go by any means but if it were mine it wouldn't be getting a belt :)

On the flip side of the above post, the 2jz engine in the gs is bullet proof when maintained properly and 190k wouldn't be a problem to a looked after engine. A preventative belt and tensioner change would be worth it if the car is in good condition as if the belt does break the car is then essentially written off due to its value.
