Speeding

I'm just wondering if its common for there to be speeding camera's at this hour of the night. Was driving home on a national primary road - long empty stretch of road so I definately drifted over the limit without realising. However I have a feeling that I may been clocked. I might be a bit irrational as it was only a car in the ditch but it looked like one of those cheeky unmarked speed camera thingys, meant to catch us out.

    Any ideas?

    Yes..

I know for a fact that the car you passed was a cop car and it clocked you..

Seriously tho how the hell would a internet forum know that??

I used to only see speed checks during the day, but I have seen mobile speed checks on motorways twice in the past month after 11pm. I have commonly seen GATSO vans at all times of day and night, most recently one at parked on the N4 coming into Dublin at 3am in the morning.

    Yes, it's common.

Over the past few weeks I've seen well hidden white Ford Transit speed trap vans parked in darkness around the Drogheda area.
They were definitely active, and the camera flashing away at unsuspecting drivers.

But at least at nighttime, you should see the camera flash if you think you were caught.

No, it was just an empty car. I was clearly speeding so of course I was paranoid after passing it. I don't remember any camera flash and it definately wasn't a van, just a regular car.

Do all speed traps come with white ford transits?

I haven't got a ticket yet, don't intend to either. I NEVER speed either so will be gutted if I get one for loosing focus for half a second...

Traveling at night ? If you noticed a bright flash in your rear view then you most likely have been photographed however there was an NRA statement last month which explained that the cameras are currently in the testing phase and drivers need not expect tickets at this time, next month it all gets real.
Of course by that time we all have retrained ourselves to never go over the limit again so no worries :D

I think that now the privatization of the speed cameras has been rolled out, we can expect to see speed traps at all times of the day and night and on every type of road, but not particularly dangerous ones for the operators safety of course

At a guess, I think we might see one or two on the M50 from time to time :(

    Hi all!

Just wondering are these Gatso vans running live now?

I got flashed this evening in the pitch black from the front!! I couldn't see a thing for a few mins and actually had to pull in down the road for a bit while my eyes adjusted again

I used this time wisely to phone my local Garda station and make a complaint! They're gonna cause more accidents than they're going to prevent doing things like that!

Same thing happened to me the other night. Van flashed a car going the other way as I was approaching it. Blinded me temporarily is not a good thing when youre approaching a town on a wet road at night...

I think this is the best idea. Eventually the Gardai will get pissed off and bollock the camera operators out of it.

I wonder about the longevity of an unmanned van snapping photos of motorists at night is.

I know in California speed cameras have been set alight, and I am sure that it is only a matter of time before these vans are vandalised.
