Commercial Tax?

I have sent in my tax renewal for my van and they have said now that i have to tax it privately as i dont use it for commercial reasons (use it for transporting my dogs).

Does anyone know if the rates are the same as taxing a private car or are there separate rates for taxing a van privately?

The only rates i can find are private cars so not sure if its those rates or not.

    Thanks

Yes, down with the rules, vote for the party that won't enforce our current laws!

    Which one is that again?

    Oh, never mind...

Its a ridiculous rule. If you have a van it should be taxed commercially regardless of use. This is how things have worked for years its only acting the b****cks starting to change how its enforced now. There is a massive thread about this already so I will say no more on the topic.

And isn't this 90% of the reason why the country is in such a mess?

You cannot compare how a van is taxed to the state of the country. Its deluded. This is how it worked for commercial tax long before the boom.

The sacrifice of a van over a car should entitle it to have lower tax, simple as that.

So if I own a large truck that is subject to 4 grand a year tax, I can just tax it as private (1566e) regardless of use?

it'd be interesting to try that, and drive the truck every day as your private car. great for the school run ha ha

A truck has nothing to do with taxing a car and commercial car-vans or vans, its like bringing a tractor into the argument or why does a push bike not pay tax. 95% of the population are or were up until very recently under the impression that a van had to be taxed commercially and that you would not be allowed to tax it privately.

This worked fine, everybody was happy bar a few people on this forum which is the only place I have ever heard any body actually support changes that case people to have to hand more of their money over to the government.

Honestly everyone I know including myself does their best to give as little as possible to the gangsters above in leinster house, but apparently some people like to bend over.....

You are grossly mistaken if you believe everyone who is tax compliant is happy paying said taxes.

Believe it or not, some people do not want to beak the Law? Being tax compliant does not mean someone supports the same taxes.

As for the van legislation? Anyone who ever taxed such a vehicle, commercially, and used it privately, was breaking the Law.

I prefer, like a large majority of people, to get away with what I can within reason rather than paying taxes I don't agree with.

As for it being against the law to drive a commercially taxed van for private use, I could not put into words how little I would even think about it never mind care, were I in the situation of owning a commercial, though I do have plenty of friends/family with commercials, some for work, some for farms and private use also and others for pulling horse boxes (commercial 4x4's) etc and they would rather chance it without tax than pay private rates.

andreac, you better check with your insurance company if you tax it private if you are still covered, I know if I tax mine private my insurance is invalid. might be worth your while checking if you do insure and tax it private can you can you still doe it or will they refuse and if they do will the nct cover it since it is still classed as a van

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there always a section on the form saying that the vehicle will only be used for commercially.

You are taxing a vehicle for Commercial use not Domestic. TBH it's people taking the p!ss and commercializing X5s, Range Rovers, Cayennes who ruined it for the rest.

95% of the population, myself included, where under the wrong impression. Just because a law wasn't enforced doesn't mean they can't start enforcing it when ever they like.

So how do i get it insured privately then if its already insured as a commercial? Although, when i am insuring i tell them its for private use and not for business, use it for transporting my dogs so wonder does that matter?

The man had told me that i still have to DOE it even though its taxed privately.
Sounds like its going to be a lot of hassle:(:(

I doubt you can get a DOE on a privately taxed vehicle.

    Hi,

Sent in my tax renewal form for my 1.8 fiesta van and came back with a letter with an attached form saying i had had to sign a declaration and get it signed by a garda and provide a cert of insurance.

I have a car van because it was cheaper to insure when i started driving (insured private) and i think it should be encouraged with younger drivers as there is less distractions in a car van with only one passenger.

Now It looks like I will have to pay €85 a year for a DOE and €555 for tax.

    Any ideas?

According to the RSA you can. The testing of a vehicle is based on the type of vehicle and not on the use.

That's disgraceful, defrauding the poor country like that ( jumps down off high horse )
Thanks for that, mine is due tax and I thought I'd just have to scrap it now, How did you register?
