I got stopped at a check point and had no tax disc displayed.Car had not been in use for 3 months as I had suffered a broken leg so tax expired.Taxed the car the day before using my lasercard and hadnt received the disc.have receipts to show. was told by the cop that I had 10 days to produce it at a station of my choice. went in the next day and produced it and waited as the garda at the desk typed a note beside my file to state that I had produced it. 2 weeks later I get a €60 fine. The dirty "££&$^%. can I get out of this???? they are saying that it has already gone through. If theres a shower worse that the black and tans...........its the traffic corp

The fine is for not displaying a tax disc, not for not having tax. Which are 2 separate offences.

No Irish registered MPV is allowed to be used on Irish roads without displaying a valid tax disc.

There are two tax-related traffic offences, (a) driving without tax and (b) not displaying a tax disc.
No manoeuvring room I believe, you did commit the second offence and were caught. You could reject the penalty notice (which is a discount on the full penalty) and fight it in court but you'd be taking a risk of getting the full penalty.
Think of it this way, luck was on your side, you narrowly avoided the first offence by the skin of your teeth. The car could have been seized on the spot and you'd could have faced a fine, a bill for towing to the compound, storage fees and a taxi home (assuming tax was out by more than 2mths)
Put in perspective, a €60 fine doesn't sound so bad after all.
