    Hi Folks,

Im currently beginning the process of planning 5/6 months backpacking through SA. Im looking at heading sometime in late feb early march. Im planning to travel brazil first and I've noticed that the Carnival Festival is taking place in Rio at the same time. Has anyone been there before, during the festival, while backpacking? Is it really that expensive during the festival? Then again i might'nt be in rio again, so maybe its worth the extra coin to expierence it. A friend mentioned traveling to the Bahia region to get a more authentic festival feeling thats not as expensive, any thoughts?

    Any opinions appreciated.

First off, check out the threads on the sticky called 'Useful travel threads', lots of SA.

For carnaval. I was in Sao Paulo for carnaval as I had a couch to sleep on there. It really is expensive, something like $130 for a dorm room. Maybe you can find some local people somewhere on the internet who might let you stay on their couch (couchsurfers maybe?).

It is great fun, once in a lifetime thing, but pricey.

I traveled South America, starting March '09, so my route might help you a bit as regards weather and stuff. I started in Rio just after Carnival. Enjoy what ever you decide!
