BMW On Demand: Zipcar for the Luxury Set

Is Zipcar just a bit too pedestrian for you? Would you prefer to run to the grocery store in a snazzy Beemer? Zipcar does offer some BMW models, but the carsharing company's luxury offerings pale in comparison to BMW on Demand, an hourly car-sharing program launching today in Munich, Germany.

The pilot car-sharing program, which is set to run for a year, comes directly from BMW. The automaker is launching the luxury car-sharing service because, according to a press release, "many customers would like to use various models at different times instead of being tied to one vehicle. For example, they'd like a 5 Series BMW Saloon for an important meeting, but would prefer a Z4 for a trip into the countryside at the weekend."

BMW on Demand features a range of models at different prices, and as you might expect from a BMW car-sharing service, rentals can get pretty expensive (an M6 Coupé costs $45 an hour). Of course, that's cheap compared to the cost of an M6 Coupé ($102,350 and up). By launching an hourly car-sharing service, BMW gains the potential to reach a market that might be willing to rent--but not buy--its vehicles.

BMW isn't the first automaker to launch a car-sharing service. Daimler's Car2Go service, which also started as a pilot program in Germany, allows customers to rent Smart cars by the minute, hour, or day. Car2Go is now available in Austin, Texas. BMW hasn't announced any expansion plans for its car-sharing service in the U.S. -- yet.

What does anyone think? Would you use a carshare service in preference to owning a car or is it just for major metropolitan cities? Would you pay a premium to be in a Beemer or would you just want 4 wheels and a steering wheel?
Is there any interest or demand for a service like this in ROI, do you think?

I'd pay 45 quid an hour to take the m6 out for a spin round Wicklow anyway :D

I think the above posts illustrate why this will never work here. :)

It's not BMWs, but the go car scheme in Cork is similar, and pretty successful.
