Disable or reduce the amount of system restore points there are.

    Temporarily disable the page file.

That should free up some space for you to start moving or deleting stuff.

first use ccleaner to do the automatic cleanup

get a tool like sequoiaview or spacemonger (older version free) they will tell you where space is used

goldern rule is that you never remove anything unless you know exactly what it is.

how big is your hard drive ?
upgrading it is one option - another option is to get an external drive and move stuff you don't use often there like backups of your home movies

you can compress folders to save space , it does slow stuff down, and you you can't compress image or sound files (videos are both so doubly uncompresible.)

Just on this, if he's got 0 space then he can search for the version that doesn't need to be installed. Also run a program called PureRa from a USB/CD and it should clear out some space also.

i think i'll just give it to a friend of my parents he works in a computer store so is infinetly more capable than me. i'll just end up doing something irreparable.
