If your past few bills were estimates then there will be some correction when they get the actual reading.

Sometimes it can be lower than expected sometimes higher. I've had both.

its my first bill. So it balances out the end does it? If i hadnt used a real reading it would have just added it next time or when a real reading was used? is that right?

You'll only pay for what you've used, at the end of the day. Keep in mind that the appliances you have could be very inefficient so explaining the higher bill. You can buy a device that clips on to the cable of any appliance to see what power it's actually using. Also stuff like leaving a timed immersion on.

And if you have one of those day/night meters, remember its doubly expensive during the day than at night.
"Night rate hours are 11pm to 8am in wintertime and 12am to 9am in summertime."

Yeah you should check the timer on the immersion, if the time is wrong it could be heating during the day.

And if things are tight on the bills front and you have an old fashioned washing machine in your apartment, set your washing machine for an overnight wash on a Saturday so you and the neighbours won't mind getting woken up. In my case i'm on the ground floor so the noise doesn't really vibrate to apts upstairs and my neighbours are usually fast asleep drunk after a night out then!

My washing machine takes 4 hours  to do a wash and dry no matter which cotton setting i use, crazy I know. Its the landlords hence I tend to do my washing overnight or nearest to it.

Might be cheaper over the year to buy another washing machine.

This just happened to me, I think in future, I will ring in my meter readings every month, I guess I just left it up to Bord Gais to sort out, now I have a big bill :(

    Hi Bob Z,

Estimated readings are based on past usage patterns, so if it's your first bill, such estimates aren't always going to be too on target, particularly if the premise has had a high turnover of tenancies.

We try to make it as easy as possible for customers to submit readings on those ocassions when they are due to be estimated, or to amend readings when they have already been estimated. If you contact us on 1850 372 372 we will be able to tell you when readings are due to be taken, and when the subsequent bill will issue.

You can also PM me with your account details if you'd like me to check this for you (or if you have any other queries related to your account). Our Boards' customer forum is located here.

    Thanks,

    David.
