Hi, just wondering if anyone could tell me what gear i need to use midi to its full capabilities? I was on a website and it was touting a program called "onstage performer" and basically said that all aspects of a show, from editing tracks on the fly, changing effects and even lighting could be all controlled with just this program, a midi compatable device and a usb to midi cable. Now ive been messing around with midis for a while now (mainly editing tracks, i would by no means be well versed in all things midi) and i cannot for the life of me understand how the lighting aspect can be done. I would be be slightly familiar with dmx but have never come across a midi controlled light.
Could anyone shed some light on this, I basically want to know is there another device thats needed to go from midi to dmx or is there just a simple soloution that i cannot see:confused:

Also the above program is $145 and i cannot find any reviews online about it, does anyone know of another program that might be a bit more reputaple that does the same thing? (ie program particular midi tracks to include lighting fx?)

    Thanks in advance!

PS MODS- I think this is the appropiate forum for this question but feel free to move if you think theres a better one.

I've never heard of that program, so I can't talk about the particulars, but if you were looking for another 'more reputable' program, have you heard of Max/MSP? You'd need to learn a good bit, the learning curve is pretty steep, but once you're there, you can do anything you want with it. Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead uses it on stage to process his guitar, and apparently controls some of the lights with it too.

Any idea how the light control is achieved through any of these programs ie is a usb to dmx box need also?

    Thanks again!
