    Hi,

I commute to work by train, often finishing off whatever I was working on my laptop while in transit.

The software that I am working on is patent protected, and some of the documents that I have downloaded from the repository are confidential..

(BTW I'm running Win7) Have any of you used truecrypt or similar apps any advice on the best free one / or not too expensive one?

    Thanks

Truecrypt is very good. You have the option of encrypting the system partition whereby you enter a password during boot. I've never had any instability problems and I haven't noticed a performance hit.

you might as well add a hard drive password in the BIOS too , this would hinder data recovery in the unlikely case there was a keylogger on the laptop

confirm that you have permission to take the data with you, better find out now than when the laptop goes walkies

+1 for True Crypt, never had any performance hits, its a solid piece of software and easy to use ! I would use it for exactly what you mentioned, plus its free, no brainer !

I have permission to take the documents with me. But yes you are right its definitely important to be sure of this.

Are you using Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise? If so you have immediate access to BitLocker.

BitLocker in W7 might be simplest alright. Also if the laptop belongs to an employer, best to check with them before encrypting.

Def check with work before you
Make any changes to the laptop, but truecrypt is the greatest tool to use.
