BMWs to become part of standard issue to British Police over next four years.

I'm interested in how BMW can also fit all the police equipment whilst it's on the production line in Germany. You've got to admit that the warranty cover and full compatibility will ensure for hassle free driving.

And 330d? That's a very nice spec for a patrol car.

Ever think it might go the same way in this part of the world?

With all the talk of cuts to UK Policing Budgets over the next 4 years this does come as a surprise.
Love to see it happen here but given that some Garda cars have 350,000 k's on them it seems quite a leap to make ?

I don't think that this is any different to the current situation and it has been that way for years. The article just says that some cars will be a BMW, not all.

In London the standard car is an Astra diesel, the area car is a 3 Series diesel and anything specialised such as armed response or traffic is a 5-Series. If you look on shows such as Traffic Cops it is always a 5-Series.

Other UK Police forces would probably be very happy to switch to the AGS procurement model. One of those tv shows is set in Hull where they drive Protons.

I saw a marked up BMW 330d In the driving school in templemore last year, it was on trial, I dont know what the result was tho. It didnt have Garda markings, it was marked up and kitted out by BMW themselves.

Was talking to a colleague of mine who's a cop with Henderson, NV police. Apparently they were given a package bid by Cadillac to supply patrol vehicles (Escalade SUVs, CTS patrol cars) which was cheaper than those being offered by Dodge, Chevy or Ford. The reason they declined it was simply due to the perception that the police were splurging money on expensive cars; the fact that in reality they were cheaper didn't seem to enter the public equation.

In order to comment honestly, one would have to look at the value of the entire package being offered by BMW, to include police modifications, spare parts, and maintenance support, not just the sticker cost of the car on the private purchase showroom floor. Certainly buying BMW or Harley motorcycles hasn't proven particularly controversial in the past.
