just got the o2 hotshot and having trouble connecting the wii to it

has anyone got any idea's how to solve it?

it's working fine with my laptop as a wireless device as I'm using it right now.

Any help would be appreciated. cheers

what encryption you have on the o2 hotspot, check the wii what encryption it support. WPA, WPA2 or WEP

i think if I remember correctly it was WPA and WPA2. can't remember about the WEP

When I turned my laptop on it connected no problem and held the connection. whereas when I tried to connect via my phone it wouldn't always pick it up. despite having a solid connection it was only coming up every now and again on my phone.

it's just mildly annoying as it's advertised as saying it connects any device via wifi.

Hi John, are you able to connect the Wii physically with the cable to test it first? Also can you check that the Wii isn't already connected to a WiFi signal?

It's a wifi adaptor and plugs in through a usb port. As far as I'm aware you can't connect internet dongles directly to the Wii.

The wii is picking up a connection from the place beside us. Just for some reason isn't picking up the hotshot. It will pick it up and when you go to connect it's vanished again.

I know enough about computers and how things work to generally fix most issues, but this device doesn't have many options and I honestly don't understand why it doesnt just work.

sorry I missed the first part. No but the wii has been used online before. There's no landline in the house hence the reason the o2 hotshot was purchased.

Ok, I'm afraid that because the Wii doesn't have a USB port you won't be able to run the initial set up and therefore it won't work with the Wii. You could bring back the Hotshot and get a Globesurfer instead though, which should work fine.

Sorry I think things got mixed up there. The wii does have a usb port. What I was saying is that consoles like the Wii and for example Xbox 360, they don't normally pick up dongles. unless this was a lie and my friend was wrong about it?

What set up would have to be run? If you give me the step by step to make the Wii pick up the hotshot that would be great. I can try it tonight when I get a chance.

It is possible to set up an Xbox with a dongle but I didn't think the Wii had a USB port, my mistake!

To install a Hotshot literally all you need to do is plug it in and follow the onscreen instructions, so I'm not sure it can be done.

I'll play around with my Wii and Hotshot this evening and see if I can get it working and let you know. I'm afraid we don't support the Wii so we wouldn't have tested this previously.

Ah now that I did not know. Thanks for that. Means easier for me to get connected if I move house again.

As for the Wii, there are 2 USB ports in the back. I know this from playing rock band and the ports for the drums, guitar and mic are all usb. I'll try that option of plugging it in and seeing if the instructions come up.

You don't plug the hotshot/mifi into the Wii it does not work like that.
The mobile hotspot just needs to be discoverable the same as if you were hooking up any other wireless device to it.

Follow the instructions here for the Wireless option on the Wii http://us.wii.com/connect/

The mifi is a stand alone wireless hotspot, it does not need to be plugged into anything.

I know but this is the problem. It's not picking it up. and when it does it doesnt make a solid connection. it just wont connect properly. yet it will connect my laptop up not a bother.

Is anyone else having this problem??

Have you a wep key set up on the mifi, are you able to enter that in the wii settings?

I don't know if you can. It was just tried the normal way you would. i.e. go into settings then connection then wireless and then pick up the device.

It would show up and then you'd enter the passcode and then it would just not connect. same happened when I tried to connect my phone to it.

Ok that's your problem, the pass phrase will not work, time to dig out the instruction book for the mifi or call o2 support, you need to set up a wep key, the wii supports several different WPA variations. The Wii is compatible with:

• WPA - PSK (TKIP)
• WPA - PSK (AES)
• WPA2 - PSK (AES)

You need to set up one of these and then try and connect again. There should also be instructions on the hotshot manufactures website.

it didnt work.. so just gave up.. it's annoying because you'd expect it to work.. my own personal suggestion would be to get UPC.. get a proper internet connection and sky instead of going for sky on it's own..

other then that you can see if anyone has had any luck with it.. I can barely get a connection half the time and the speed is stupidly slow.. nearly dial up slow...

Its not possible for me to get UPC or SKY internet in unfortunatly but I only bought the hotshot a week ago so retuned it today so bloody annoying, I already have the o2 dongle so gonna get the wii LAN adapter and try and connect through my computer with an ethernet cable.

Sky don't do broadband anyway, so no one can get that.

It should be possible to use Internet connection sharing on a Windows computer, and share it to the Wii over Ethernet, but you're far better off getting a router. Check the sticky thread at the top of the forum.

The hotshot is set to wpa2, the wii only connects through wpa. Login to your hotshot and go to WLAN - WLAN BASIC SETTINGS and change the 802.11 setting from wpa2-tkip to wpa/wpa2-tkip. I had this problem myself and that sorted it, works great now!

You can't expect any provider to be able to provide technical support for every third party product. It wouldn't be feasible for any company to provide support for devices they don't manufacture.
