so im applying for a visa and part of the application requires a digital photograph to be submitted that must meet the following requirements

The image must be in the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format.
The maximum image file size is 240 kilobytes (240 KB).
Minimum acceptable dimensions are 600 pixels (width) x 600 pixels (height). Image pixel dimensions must be in a square aspect ratio (meaning the height must be equal to the width).
image must be in color (24 bits per pixel). 24-bit black and white or 8-bit images will not be accepted.

i have tried to take a picture with photobooth and then edit it down to 600*600 in iphoto but it got rejected for not being 600*600

    anyone have any ideas?

Did iPhoto claim that it had changed the pixels to 600 x 600? I can see how to get iPhoto to change the aspect ratio to 'square' which is the first thing that needs to happen, can't see how to then change the pixel count to 600 x 600, maybe Picasa could help there?

Just looking at the passport office requirements again, the picture taken by PhotoBooth on my iMac is 640 x 480 and if I crop this to aspect ratio 'square' I end up with a picture which is 480 x 480, this might be your problem. It would be even worse if, when cropping, you have to eliminate some background as you could then end up with something like 400 x 400 which they won't accept and if you resize it to 600 x 600, they may refuse it on the basis of poor quality.

I can't see anywhere in the Apple website which says what the actual resolution of the camera is but I suspect it's 640 x 480 cause I can't see anywhere to change the resolution when taking a snap using PhotoBooth.

If this is the case then you'll have to use an external camera to take a snap, upload it to the Mac and use iPhoto to crop it to a square.

i just hit crop and then custom and put in 600*600 i assumed that the image was greater then that in the first place

the camera on my phone should be high enough quality if i get the lighting right

    thanks for the help

The iMac's camera is actually 1 mega pixel, and there is an app out there somewhere to utilise the full resolution, can't remember the name of it though. Maybe iSight?

    edit: it is indeed isight
