I'm thinking of buying a wireless router with built in modem. I'm just wondering if I switch to cable broadband in the future will the device still function as a wireless router alone as the modem part will be no longer needed?

It won't be a router, but it could be a basic wireless switch. Don't do it though, it's not the right tool for the job. A modem/router routes between the telephone DSL connection and the Ethernet LAN ports. A router will route between an Ethernet WAN port and the Ethernet LAN ports.
