I am doing a bit of home recording. I have the software, keyboard and interface. I am looking for a good quality, but not extravegently priced, microphone to record vocal and guitar mainly.

I have a SM58 but I hear condensers are better quality for this job.

    :D

thanks for the feedback man. for budgetary reasons I was hoping to find a good quality mic that would do for both guitar and vocals. would any of them mics do the job?

Wouldn't recommend any of the AKG c series, except the 414/214.
The cX000's aren't up to much in my experience.

More details: what interface are you using, is it acoustic or electric you want to record, what style of music?

the only thing I'd use a c1000 for would be to stir a large cup of coffee.
    imho

ive only EVER found 2 uses for a c1000.

    1. a mono room pointed directly between top of the kick and toms and crushed to hell by EL fatso.

    2. an ambient gtr mic for old style tremelo ala pulp fiction. sat about 4 feet back from the cab and off axis.

other than that it would make a good coffee stirrer.. or sex toy!

    I use a C1000 on every session................as a talkback mic.

As for a good mic, there's several cheap Chinese mics available that won't break the bank. They also won't sound as good as some of the studio standard mics but are great value. One I've had good experience with is the 'studio projects C1'.

The cheaper Audio Technica large diaphragm mics are great value.

I am using an MBox 2 interface and I will be recording mainly vocals and acoustic guitars maybe mandolin too.

These little Beyerdynamics are fab on mando, guitar and banjo. Get a pair for XY stereo:

    And here's the Audio Technica:

Great for vocals and very good on concertina and accordion also.

about 200 would be the budget - thats why I'm thinking of one decent mic rather than two lesser mics

Or their new one, bundled with a pop shield, cable and reflection filter for about €170?

Good write up in SOS: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb10/articles/x1bundle.htm

cheers fitz. it looks like a good one in terms of vocals. be good for guitar too you think? I'm tempted and the price is right

Can't really say without hearing it...if you can find somewhere to demo it, that'd be the ideal.

Now, bear in mind, at this price-range, nothing is going to be stellar, but as a first condensor on the budget you have, and based on the SOS review, I'd imagine it will do the job.
